    whoops! wrong primers!

so i accidentally picked up the wrong primers the other day. i can't return it per store policy. so here's my question: can i use small magnum pistol primers for non-magnum loads? i've read around the internets and some people are saying there isn't any difference and its safe to shoot. the internet is also saying that magnum primers are used to effectively burn up loads that have a crap load of powder (hot loads); hence being that non-magnum loads will always burn it's powder regardless of primers, its safe. here's my loads:

    9mm
    115g FMJ
    4.5g of 700x
    OAL: 1.1

    9mm
    115g LRN
    3.5g of 700x
    OAL: 1.1

safe to load? thoughts? wtt for 1k primers

Download a little bit, try a few and work back up to your former load. You'll probably find that you're fine unless your current load (non-magnum) is right on the edge pressure wise. Some primers are a little hotter and will cause a little bit higher pressures. Magnums also tend to have harder cups so you might find that you get lite strikes with them.

You can use mag primers as long as you stick with minimum and mid-level powder level for the particular powder you have selected.

Purchase something in 357 Magnum. That is what this is telling you. Problem solved. It was not an accident it happened for a reason. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

I agree, there is no problem using Mag primers. when you could not find a primer to save your life I had 1k of Mag SPP and was out of 9mm load, so I droped down to the starting load for the bullets I had and worked up. they all shot well.

You don't have to. If you use minimum powder charge for your particular load or even mid-level load you will be good to go.

                  well for this load:

                  9mm
                  115g LRN
                  3.5g of 700x
                  OAL: 1.1

the min is 3.3 and the max is 3.7. i'm already at mid-level. i think i'll make 20 or 3.3 then another 20 at the original data. wish i had a chrono

i did this same thing. luckily i want trying to push preasures or velocity. i was just doing minimum loads for my 1911 plinking ammo. they shot fine.

                      I wouldn't use them

Send them to me for proper disposal

Actually just use lighter loads and you should be fine

yep, mag primers will bump the pressure slightly so back off a little and you'll be fine, just fine.

You'll be fine. You are using lead bullet so it will be less friction going down the barrel than jacketed bullet.

There was an article I read many years back regarding the use of mag primers instead of reg primers ( I believe Guns and Ammo but I could be wrong on this), that mag primers adds anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 psi in chamber pressure as per pressure sensure used at the time.

I have a cheap model of Chrono. So far it's been good. I have not shot the unit yet .
