    Group buy: 4895

Jeff Bartlett (gibrass.com) has 4895 powder for $106.06 per 8# jug with a six jug order (hazmat waived). This is easily $20 cheaper than it can be had any other way, including the gun show.
This is new, fresh powder, not pull down or mixed lot.

Milsurp powder's getting scarce. This may just be one of the last chances to get it at a reasonable price.

NOTICE: Group buy on hold until further notice. Will advise soon.

Not really in the area but curious as to which 4895 it is?

A few companies make stuff called 4895

Powder Valley Inc has IMR 4895 for $111.50 and H4895 for $113. If you divide up the $20 HazMat fee over 6 Jugs it adds $3.33 to the price of each 8 Lb jug it makes the price $114.83 for IMR4895 and $116.33 for H4895. PVI will ship up to 48 Lbs of powder and primers (combined) under one Hazmat fee so that would cut the HazMat fee down to less than 50 cents per 8 Lb Jug if you max out an order.

Surplus 4895 is usually compared to IMR4895 but it is not an exact match so loading information should be used for a guide, not gospel. If you use the normal precautions during load development it should not be an issue.

A quote from the 4895 info at Jeff's site: "..Testing has proven this powder very accurate. However, this lot burns slightly slower than IMR4895, closer to IMR4064. This is new powder, not pulldown."

Keeping in mind that surplus powder may vary substantially more lot to lot than commercial, this is apparently one lot and its characteristics are known.

Jeff confirmed shipping to here at $36.36 for six jugs and no hazmat. You didn't quote shipping on PVI's order, but if you figure Jeff's shipping in, PVI is still around $15 more per jug. My quote on Jeff's price is total cost.

Yep. Jeff's data on this powder puts it toward 4064 in burn rate. Better for 165-175 match bullets. I always develop milsurp powder loads over a Chrony, but starting loads for 4064 should keep anyone out of trouble.

I'd be more inclined to buy commercial 4895 or 4064. $20 savings per 8 lb is ok, but you may as well get the benefit of new production powder.

Now the 4895 surplus back when it was $80 per 8lb, that was a good deal since the price was nearly $50 cheaper than commercial 4895 per 8lb.

That's a real good deal for surplus.

You do know the law for that amount of powder and storage, right?

Transportation law as well? Hate to see you get into some trouble for this............

Okee Doakee... I guess we're on hold until further notice here. I was approaching a coupla ranges (to have been annoounced by PM when the orders were firmed up) for taking delivery of the order so no one unpermitted would have to hold or carry more than the legal amount of propellant under law. Some of the guys I was approaching also lurk here sometimes. Last thing they, or I, want is public scrutiny or official attention, even though it's legal. So, until I can assure them relative privacy, we stop here.

As for the laws involved: California Health & Safety Code sections 12102 and 120124 are relevant, as is the CHP's regs on transporting smokeless propellant in quantities of less than 10 lbs, 10 to 20 lbs and over 20 lbs, all of which we had covered. I had a coupla wooden containers I could loan for double jug orders. Oh well..

Wish I had been asked about this by Private Message rather on the public forum. My fault, I guess. Sorry.
