    tools for gun smithing?

i just got a 1911 GI model, and i am going to start ordering parts for it. i want to build this pistol myself, since i have the time now. what tools would u recommend. im not looking to do very professional work, since i know i wont be able to. but just enough to get the parts to fit the pistol. what griding stones will i need, and at what level of finess (1000grit, 600 grit? i just want really simple tools in which i can get the parts to fit the pistol if needed.

    thanks.

Huh?? You got a 1911 GI that you are ordering parts for so you can build the rifle yourself??

A 1911 GI is a pistol. If you just got one, why do you need parts to build it? Maybe you should start with some books before you buy any tools or do any grinding, filing, stoning, sanding, or blasting on a gun.

What is it you're trying to do??

Before you buy any tools, buy these:

Read those two books thoroughly, and you'll have an idea of what you will need. I have copies of these on my bookshelf.

        + a zillion.

There are no better books (none even close) that cover the 1911 in as much detail as the 2 above. BEST money you can ever spend if you want to learn about 1911's. Kuhnhausen's other books cover different guns and are just as good. No disappointments
