ANY LOCAL WANNA HELP A SHOOTER OUT WITH A .308 MIC?

    Hey, shooters...

I am currently working-up a .308 load, and I need to mic my chamber.

Would anyone happen to have the RCBS PRECISION MIC for a .308 Winchester?

If you're close enough, I can drive to pick it up. Or we can meet at the Richmond R&GC on a weekend, or I'll pay for the shipping both ways.

Anyhoo...I thought it was worth a shot.

    Thanks for reading this.

Just size apiece of brass and drop a bullet in the chamber then put the flare brass in behind it. Close the bolt then open it and the bullet will be stuck I'm the brass and that will give you your chaber size. If the bullet does not stay in the brass when you close the bolt and open it then just take a cleaning rod and stick it sown the barrel with the bullet and brass in the chamber with the bolt closed and tap the bullet with the end of the rod very gently and open the bolt and you'll be gtg!

FYI: If you ever want to remeasure using the same RCBS tool, you will need to get the exact tool you borrowed. The index marks may or may not be the same from tool to tool. Granted, they should be, but they're not 'calibrated' since they are comparator marks only, not true measurements like on a caliper which can be zero'd out.

Why are you chasing lands? Stop it. Load to mag length and save yourself the headache. If you wanna chase lands, get a benchrest rig.

+1 J-cat. do you have a stock action?

Are you trying to find the head space or the maximum COL?

If your set on trying to fine the Maximum COL you can use a wooden dowel method.

That's what I did.. works like a charm. I used a Wolf berdan primed shell... drilled our the primer and slightly sized the neck to get a nice grip on the bullet.
I then used a sharpie and colored the bullet to make it easier to see where the lands were touching.

I just ordered one for .223/5.56 the other day and was thinking of getting the .308 as well. Humm!

Raymond, I don't have the RCBS Precision Mic, but I do have a set of the Hornady (formerly Stoney Point) headspace bushings. The .400"bushing is used for .308 Winchester. I've used it to to check the shoulder length my fired .308 cases and then set my resizing die to bump .002" back. Seems to work.

I live close to you and your welcome to use it. If you are checking bullet length to the lands, I also have the Hornady OAL gauge with the .308 win. case. I don't know if you want to set max bullet OAL to lands or set for minimum shoulder setback when you resize. I have both gauges.

                PM me if you wish.

                  Thanks for the feedback, shooters.

Ocabj, I was not aware of that information you gave me. Thanks...good to know.

And for the other shooters, I need to guage the distance to the barrels lands...as well as the shoulder for my headspace.

For accuracy, I need an accurate guage. Especially since I need to home-roll four or five different loads, set to different bullet-seated depths (sometimes with differences of 1/100th of an inch) to see which gives me the best accuracy.

I also need to adjust my dies for shoulder set-back, for proper headspace.

In case I didn't mention...it will be for a BOLT-ACTION rifle, and not a semi-auto, magazine fed, beastie.

Flight762, a PM is inbound. I have never used the guages you mentioned, but I will research it a bit more, and possibly give it a try.

But if anyone has the RCBS Precision Mic for the .308 Win...I would prefer that, as I know they are accurate, and I also know how to use it.

                  Thanks again, shooters.
