Casting bullet question

After reloading for more than a year now, I decided to try my hand at casting bullets and got some basic equipment. I successfully casted some 9mm bullets, coated them with liquid alox and used a bit of Mica powder and let them dry off for a few days. I then resized them and proceeded to reload them.

My question is that when I reload them, a tiny portion of the lead scraps the neck of the case and end up forming a very small "turtleneck" of lead around the case neck. Half of the time, I can remove that tiny shard of lead with my nails. Should I worry about that small amount of lead around the case neck or may it cause some problems feeding the round or worse?

Try belling the case mouth so the the bullet will just sit there and not fall off.
It called lead shaving. When you taper crimp them don't let the case mouth go into the bullet.

you reloading dies shoudl have came with an expander dial it down a tad more

sounds like you got the casting down pretty good but i normally size mine then lube them

Bohoki is correct.

Size them first...

Lube them second...

Place a decent bell on your case before boolit insertion...

Those little scrappings are a no-no. They are removing the coating from the boolit, and you are gonna get some NASTY lead fouling in your barrel because of it.

Depends on what he's using for boolit resizing. If he's using the Lee sizing die, as I do, then a very light coat of liquid Alox beforehand is a good idea. For this purpose, I use a 50/50 mix with mineral spirits--again, only a very light coat is needed. After sizing, then I give it the "normal" coat of liquid Alox. All this goes pretty fast; I generally process 1,000 to 2,000 boolits this way in pretty short order.

I do agree with the other posters about belling your case mouth enough. Screw in your flaring die a little more. Lead shaving is bad, so you want to avoid it.

Yes, I do use Lee products. I'm pretty close to have the whole thing figured out and you guys input helped me a great deal. Thanks to you all.

the reason i ram my bullites through the lee sizer dry is that i can easily tell when i made one slightly undersized and i cull that one since it would probably just skid down the rifling

but i am using the TL molds that are pretty darn good

How long does it take to cast 100 bullets? (Sorry, boolits!)

funny you should ask yesterday i came across 100 9mm casings so i sized and primed them then looked in my box of cast boowits and only had about 20

ah man

so i heated up my lead (took about 15 minutes) did it at noon:30 it was all melty at 12:45 then i started casting with my lee 2 cavity mold and just kept going till it looked like there was about 100 in my 5 gallon bucket of water stopping at 1:20 i then went in to shove them through the lee sizer and finished that at 1:30 then went out and squirted a bit of lee liquid alox and let them dry in the sun on wax paper for about an hour (man it was hot yesterday)

then while glen beck was on i loaded up the primed cases and was done before he was

i ended up with one bad casting and 130 total now my box of cast bullets has 52 bullets in it

its kind of annoying to do but i feel like i'm sticking it to da man

get the 6 cavity and you'll be getting 250 per half hour or so... I don't time myself but I do 10lbs per day and it only takes me at most half an hour.

That's pretty good speed. It's somewhat dependent on the mass of your boolit. With my 105gr LSWC 6-banger, I can hit 400 per half hour, and when I did a test with two hot pots, I hit close to 800 in a full 60 minutes. With the 200gr LRNFP, it's closer to 250.
