    reloading 270 weatherby magnum help

Anyone have experience reloading 270 weatherby magnum?

I have loaded Nosler Ballistic tip 130grn spitzer with a load of 70 grns of H4831sc.

    Is that too much powder?

    Any experience with this combination?

Email Weatherby and ask them. A friend reloads that I'll have to ask. What does the book say? Or does it say?

Sounds right. Pay attention to the pressure then look up what the gun allows. Most bolt gun top loads would be something like 55000 psi and the gun would handle over 80000 with out exploding. Now semi autos can handle like 61000 psi and the max loads are at 57000. Not much room to screw up. Weatherby are gonna be a bolt gun and they are made with the best material and the closest tolerences. I'm gonna guess and say it's a mark 5 action so u can hot load that think and not blow up the action. Yr brass won't last but yr fine.

Pick yr fps u think the gun will like and might several high and low loads and see what it pattern like. My ar likes 24 g for about 2900fps. Do I start at 23.6 23.8 24 24.2 and 24.6 with my max load about 26.7g.

Thanks for the info so far

I asked hodgdon they said 66-70
          I asked Nosler they said 68 -72
the speer reloading manual for 130 gr 68-72

The only thing that concerned me was the Hodgdon recommendation, but it sounds like the 70 grain load is fine.

nolser 5th edition reports that 72gr to be the most accurate.

If you're intending to take big game with that 130 Nosler B.T., that bullet at the 270 Weatherby velocities will fragment violently at close range(0-300 yards).
For Varmints it will be fine. I've stopped using that bullet in my 270 Winchester unless I'm taking a clean double Lung side shot. If you hit bone, you will loose a lot of meat.

For your Weatherby for big game, you're better off using a bullet that holds together better at high velocity such as the Swift Sirocco, Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partition or the bonded bullets from Nosler and Hornady. The all copper bullets will do well such as the Barnes TSX or the Hornady GMX or Nosler E-Tip.

Stop right there and put the reloading equipment down.

You are loading rifle cartridges with no idea of what the maximum powder levels are?

You need to read the introduction and information sections of a few reloading manuals before you do anything else.

The manuals are conservative and you should be fine with 70grns. However, you should buy a reloading manual and you should be working your loads up to max to see what your gun likes as far as accuracy and pressure. Hodgdon has a nice load data webpage, and there are several websites such as handloads.com and reloadersnest. Again these are just starting points for you to work off of.

You're going to have a tough time getting Weatherby factory velocity with H4831, it's real accurate in my .300wby but about 150fps below factory wby ammo velocity. I have had better results with IMR7828.
