.22lr SubSonic Ammo, How Loud Is It?

how loud really is subsonic ammo? Ive been wanting to use subsonic ammo due to my ear infection so how loud is it? Ive heard it loud as a pellet rifle at 600FPS but i dont believe it. Can anyone tell me?

Depends on the ammo, really. Target ammo is subsonic, it doesn't really sound any quieter to me. If you get some Colibris, though, that's supposed to be pretty quiet. I'd believe it, since there's no powder in them.

How quiet do you need to get? If I shoot my .22 (rifle) with hearing protection, I really can't hear it.

The subsonic I've tried is not a whole lot quieter than regular velocity ammo, depending on the ammo.

The Colibris are way quiet, and slow, too. When I shot them at the range back when they had a steel backdrop, you could hear them hit the backdrop - pop-clink, pop-clink... Sort'a like shooting a .45 at the outdoor range.

I don't know what kind of gun you're hoping to shoot, but semi-auto .22 rifles...? The bolt cycling sounds louder than the report.

Honestly, if the sound of a .22 rifle through hearing protection is going to cause you pain, I can't see how you could even type.

Wear good ear muffs. You won't even hear it.

I've used the Aguila SSS (Sniper Sub-sonic) a few times and they are quiet! You can't barely here them coming out of a rifle, and they are still darn quiet coming out of my little .22 revolver. I swear I could shoot them in my backyard and no one would think I was shooting anything more than a high-powered pellet gun! haha

The only problem with them is that you can basically watch the bullet come out of the barrel.

Yeah, but I love that KA-THUNK sound they make! I've been shooting the liitle Walther I just got (for the kids)with CB shorts, and I can't wait to try the SSS in it. It'll be way cool if they actually cycled (though I won't hold my breath).

I have used the Aguilla SSS is a single shot .22 rifle and would compare the sound to my Gamo pellet gun, it sounds like somebody dropping a 2x4 on concrete

I tried Aguila SSS in my 10/22 . it's a little bit quieter, but won't cycle the next round. i expected it to be as quiet as a silencer. I have like 40 rounds, i'd give to you to have, if you were in the area

SSS cycled in my Marlin 60, but it tumbled like mad.

Was still pretty accurate, though, even if it was going through the paper sideways.

Depends on the length of the barrel, I have a CZ 452 w/ 28.75" barrel that is very quiet w/ subsonics; exceptionally so if you compare it to a 10/22 w/ 18" barrel shooting standard velocity ammo.

The aguilla SSS isn't as bad as some people say.

It depends a lot on your barrel length and twist rate.

I have had great luck using them in all manner of guns, the longer the barrel, the quieter they are. they are still not silent, but my friend and I shoot in his basement with them occasionally (while test firing guns)

they work best in bolt action guns, although with the correct springs/pollishing they will work in a 10/22 reliably.

they are actually pretty loud in a pistol, I wouldn't reccomend them for that.

the 60 grain bullet may be slow, but it's plenty good for squirls in the backyard.

the gun is a CZ452. Bolt action. The reason is crows keep on taking my dogs food and they sit on my fiber-optic internet cable line i dont want some crows to break my internet connection

I would suggest "the urban cat load" or CB caps for short. If you have a penetration problem, try .22 shorts.

Just for the record for you who keep asking about how quiet subsonics are: Subsonic simply means the bullet velocity does not exceed the speed of sound. I does not mean that the round is designed to be quieter than any other round.
