Help - Newbie needs 9mm ammo advice

I just bought my FIRST gun ever TODAY! Woo! A Glock 17 9mm.

My question is, I'd like to buy about 500 rounds of ammo online so that it's cheaper than buying retail locally. But I have no idea what to start with. What grain should I get? Brand? Type?

I'll be using this at an indoor range on paper targets--I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something appropriate for the gun, reliable, and safe.

The more specific your suggestions, the better. Thanks!

    MM

If you are located in north san diego county and are going to Iron sights in Oceanside, they carry reloads that are reasonably priced. I don't know about 9mm, but the .40 was 18.00 per 50

            +1.

Definitely Walmart for that Federal box of 50 for 9.97. Your Glock will pretty much eat anything you put into it. Most store bought 9mm is a 115gr bullet. The 115gr is the weight of the actual bullet, not the whole cartridge. It's perfect for plinking at the range, and very affordable. You made a wise choice for your first handgun. It'll serve you well.

Since you are shooting at an indoor range, be sure to know their rules. Some indoor ranges do not allow metal casings and/or metal core bullets. Be sure to know their rules because in your internet search for cheap ammo, you may come across some that isn't OK at your indoor range. Oftentimes a range will run a magnet across your ammo to be sure it is OK to shoot at their range.

I haven't really shopped for ammo online, but long story short, you can't go wrong with the above mentioned box at Walmart. Also, you won't have any problems shooting it at any indoor range.

            Good luck!

              +1 on Wal-Mart!
IF, they have it on hand.
Good gun choice, by the way.

^^^ This. You're lucky. 9mm ammo has been fairly easy to come by lately.

Cabela's still has their deal on Sellier & Bellott at $9.99. It is some extra work reloading that brass though. The primer pockets are crimped. Their cases vary, some ferrous. I think these are all brass. I use it for when I will lose my brass. WalMart is fine too, but I simply ordered a whole case from Cabelas rather than play any quantity restriction games with WalMart, which is currently unrestricted, I believe.

honestly with the cost of factory value pack 9mm ammo, unless your gonna be shooting 1k+ a month I wouldnt worry about reloading much. Boxer w/crimp would be fine.

I think that's true. For now.

But when February rolls around I'll bet reloading 9mm starts looking a lot more cost effective.

Agreed, but also if I shot 9mm as much as I shoot .45 I would deffintly reload, since I already have all the money invested in all the other equipment. If I just shot 9mm, I wouldnt have bought into reloading at the time I did.

9mm is acturally one of those rounds which you can get away with even if you don't reload.
