    Basic Question about cost

I have been lurking in the reloading forum for a while and am starting to think about getting a basic setup.

I am curious as to the overall cost of a basic load in 9mm and 223. Does anyone have a current price for the cost per round of 9mm and 223 with reused brass? Also how much more, roughly, does it cost with new fresh brass?

    Nothing special, just basic 115/124 grain 9mm / 55or62 FMJ 223.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.

from what I have gathered from reading the other posts in this forum, it all comes down to quantity. the more you buy, the cheaper per round

yeah, it can vary, depending also on quality / brand materials you use. So it's good to use the calculator with various bullet weights you plan to shoot. In the end, I think it's worth it.. in many ways.

Actually you will not save any money by reloading. You will shoot more and have another gun related hobby though.

I don't do 9mm, but I do .38 Special, which is pretty similar from a powder quantity standpoint. I make a box of 50 rounds for $3.25 with boolits that I cast.

As Divernhunter said, you won't save money on an absolute scale. You will save a lot of money per round, though, which will allow you to shoot a whole lot more!

Equipment costs + component costs = Cost per round.

Equipment costs = Machine, Dies, primer pick up tubes, case gages, calipers, powder scale,
primer flip tray, tumbler and media, spare parts, reloading manuals, reloading bench. ect.......

Component Costs = Brass ( new, once fired or range pick ups ) Primers, Powder and Bullets
The more you buy the cheaper it gets:
                Bullets 5 to 10K
                Primers 5 to 10K
Powder 8#s 7,000 grains = One pound of powder

since i started reloading, my checking account has been at an all time low.... reloading inspires me to go to the range more often, or else the cycle cannot repeat itself. i get so lonely.

Yeah and it gets real bad if you get a C&R FFL. Hardly enought for TV dinners but go to the range often.

A C&R FFL will allow (notice I did not say save) you to get discounted prices for reloading stuff(and other gun stuff) from many suppliers. You spend as much or more on"deals" and have more stuff for loading and more shooting.

"Save Money"???? Never but you will shoot much more.

Depending on the volume of bulk components you buy and the press you purchase, on average a reloader will have saved enough money to paid off their press after they have loaded around 500-1,000 rounds. This is all dependent on what materials are used and if you purchase in bulk.

For example (bear in mind this is only an off-hand example to show numbers)
If you were to purchase 20 boxes of pistol ammo (50 rounds per box) for $20 per box you would spend $400 to get 1,000 rounds of this ammo at $0.40 per round.

If you were to go out and purchase a $20 container of powder, reuse your old brass, purchase a brick (1,000ea) of primers for $35 and box of moly coated lead bullets for $80, you would have spent only $140 so far and then you reload it for $0.14 per round.

                        That's a $0.26 savings over each round ($260).

Most pistol brass can be reloaded a few times before needing to purchase new brass, this is one area to save money when you collect and save up your own brass.

You'll save up enough money to shoot more then you could have if you bought factory made ammo. Shoot more for less

If you use free brass and buy bullets primers and powder in bulk, figure that you can make the best quality ammunition for about half of what the cheapest factory loads cost.

What that means is that in the first 2-3,000 rounds of pistol ammo you will probably break even paying for equipment, depending on what type of loader and accessories that you buy.
