Primer question.

Hi Folks,

I messed up a batch of brass of about 50 rounds. I henceforth pulled all of the bullets and saved the powder. The casings are ruined due to an improperly sent die but my question is:

If I knock the primers out can I reuse them? Common sense suggests that these too are toast but I wanted to get some advice from other more experienced reloaders.

50 primers not worth the effort. Yes it can be done however, I don't recommend doing it. You will get answers like no problem do it all the time ect...

I agree with Chief. Be safe not sorry. Just chalk it up to experience gained.

Your talking like what saving $2.00. Look at as a cheap lesson after a goof. I have never used pulled primers though you can do it if you wish. If you do be careful removing them and wear eye protection and keep all flammables and gun powder at a safe distance. If you were in my neck of the woods I would give you 50 primers just to keep you from doing it.

50 primers i would knock them out you just do it on the press slow

i do it all the time with just one or two hell the primer is the most expensive component i use

i make my own bullets and bullseye powder goes along way and i scrounge my cases from ranges

Thanks for the suggestions folks and the offer of free primers but I realize it's not that much money and I'm not hard up like alot of people. I was just curious as to what peoples experiences are.

Primers although removable are probably not reseatable. The press fit will probably loose some tension. But I have never tried. Maybe it will be a good expriment.

Just de-prime them and reuse them.

I do it all the time. There is no need to waste them. I don't know why poeple are saying it's dangerous and not to do it.

I do go a little slower when de-priming live primers, but it can be done and the primers can be re-used.

Gregory now you mentioned that you goofed on the cases. I would take it that you cannot run those case back in the resizing die in order to remove the primers. If that is the case do not use the hammer and punch method. Bad ju-ju.

I've ran primed cases in the resizing die without any incident to remove the primers many times. Just use moderate and steady pressure on the press. Always wear safety glass.

Same here, I'd just resize and don't re-use the primer.

yeah, remember... you can remove a live primer the traditional way of a spent primer, but I would be weary of re-using it as you may have change the dynamics (crushing the anvil) and making them either useless (and waste of time) or too sensitive (dangerous).

All the primers I have reused went bang. The dynamics are not changed by de-priming. I've read countless posts on this topic on reloading forums and personally did it numerous times.

It is fine to deprime and reuse.

just because nobody here has died doing this doesn't make it a good idea. when it comes to anything potentially harmful, the wise move is to err on the side of caution. Steve Irwin didn't get eaten by all the crocodiles he f'ed with but that stuff catches up sooner or later now doesn't it? just throw that stuff away and start fresh. chalk it up to experience and don't blind yourself to prove some people wrong and some right.

You can remove and reuse, but they do not sit tightly inside the primer pocket.
