Dillion Powder Measure problem

I just finished up loading 200 30-06 rounds on my Dillion XL 650. My press worked great except for one thing. It spills powder. After a case was charged with powder and moved to the next station, a small amount of powder would spill from the measure. I check the powder die to make sure it was adjusted correctly as well as made sure the powder bar was traveling the full length and both were set up correctly. This does not happen when I load pistol rounds. I am using Varget powder.

Any suggestions on the problem or how to fix it?

Is Varget a stick type powder? Stick powder sometimes bridge and don't flow well through powder measures. I know some guys polish the heck out of the inside metal surfaces of the measure to a shine. It would help the powder flow better. Maybe look and see if there isn't some debris inside the funnel and if not, possibly any spot in it that might be catching the powder.

Varget is a stick powder. I just read the trouble shooting section of the manual and it said mentions stick style powders as a cause but it does not say how to fix it.

I ride the shellplate with my finger to minimize the index click. People also trim the spring under the plate. Google xl650 shellplate mod.

Stick powders can bridge in the powder die or the case mouth. If you're using a wet case lube, you should switch to a dry lube and see if that helps. Anything wet/sticky in the case neck or powder drop will poo the scrooch every time.

If these things don't help, you can try giving the powder dispenser a little tap while the press is up.

PS: Make certain the powder dispenser is mounted correctly.

I was using One Shot spray on lube which I guess can be tacky but normally not so much.

I will recheck my powder die/measure to make sure it is set up correctly.

like JoeLogic said, ride your plate with your finger to smooth it out.

Allso try going a bit slower, as you should not be interested in SLAMMING THEM OUT...but concentrate more on good accurate rounds.

It "may" help you by giving you a general idea of what to accomplish in setting up a press, and reloading for consistency.

Try another powder (spherical)
Polish the inside of the powder funnel with flitz and a rag.
Hold on the upstroke for 1 second.
Cut shell plate spring so it does not pop into the next location.
Flare the lips of the case ever so slightly with a M die

If you are interested in accurate consitent loads when using Dillon powder measure use only spherical powders.
