Reloading 9mm - worth it?

I'm considering getting into reloading and I shoot 9mm a lot. I can purchase a decent brand of ammo for around $250 per 1000.

I'm very new to this, so I did a quick price check and I'm over $300 per 1000 rounds if I try to reload, and that's not including the powder.

And I just pricing it out using the high-end components?

Is reloading 9mm just not worth it?

Yes, it's worth it to reload.
It costs me only $120 per 1000rds if I reload with lead bullets and $140 per 1000rds with copper jacketted bullets.
I reuse the brass up to 15-20 times before I retire them.

I shoot 9MM more than anything else. As long as you have a progressive it is worth the time,

Ditto. I shoot IDPA and IPSC 2-4x a month so reloading will pay for itself in the long run.

i scrounge brass and reloaders don't count their time as money


i cast my own bullets with lead i get for free but it takes significant proccesing melting removing impurities then remelting to cast so that costs about $10 in fuel per 1000

primers at the reno show were $21 plus tax per k and a pound of bullseye at sportsmans warehouse was like $20 which does about 2000 at 3.5 grains

so if you dont count the long hours of sitting over a bowl of 750 degree lead and the electricity of the tumbler to clean the brass
and the media that i change every 5k or so at about $10 for 5 pounds of crushed walnut the back strain from picking up brass

its worth it to me

if i had to buy brass, buy fmj, pay $35 for 1k primers

i wouldn't do it

heck i didn't start loading for 9mm till it hit $10 a box

when it was $10.97 for the walmart 100 winpack i was just spraying 9mm all over gods creation leaving the brass where it lay

When you reload, you are much less at the mercy of what is on the local store shelf, and next February holds little fear for you.

I got my last 5000 lead 9mm bullets for $30 per 1000 SHIPPED. Now I wish I had bought more. I'm down to the last 3K or so and need to switch the Dillon 1050 over to load them up. Once you get a reloader you might as well load everything you shoot.

Now that I'm a reloader, finding brass on the ground is like crack. I can't imagine ever shooting and leaving my brass again. Actually I was picking up my brass before I started reloading... It's true what they say, you don't save money reloading, you just end up shooting more Which is fine with me, it also takes a chunk of your time to reload ammo as well, which is what I'm having trouble doing these days.

It costs me $51 for 1,700 rounds (my cast bullets) of my favorite 9mm load. Yes, it is cost effective. Especially when you start casting.

Right now at Walmart Federal 9mm is $9.97/box and has been consistently available for several months. That's $200/1000 for very decent FMJ, you're getting a bad price on a volume like that at $250/1000.

It seems pretty hard to justify reloading 9mm FMJ when the purchase price is back down to $0.20/rd. I just bought a 9mm barrel for my G33 so I can shoot the cheap store bought stuff (alongside my Hi Power).

I am setup to reload EVERY pistol caliber I have as of the beginning of this year, and have components for same - but until I cannot buy practice ammo, it's a waste of time to reload for pistols.

I am still catching up reloading lead-free hunting ammo for a number of different rifles, some calibers which have commercial lead-free commercial options and some which don't. That seems a better use of time to me.

I don't have enough time to shoot as much as I'd like and my range is ~15 min away - and I'd much rather shoot than reload!

Aside from the possibility of saving money on the rounds, reloading is really fun. It's addicting. If you start to factor in time spent, it may not be worth it. But if you take up reloading it becomes another hobby next to your shooting. It's so much fun. Me and a buddy talk reloading more than about actual shooting. It's good stuff...

Here in Sonoma County, the local Walmart charges $13.49 for Federal or Wichester FMJ 9mm.

That's the cheapest it gets around here. $9.97 sounds like a dream. Sigh....
