    Recipe section

Although I'm relatively new to the reloading section... I was thinking with the recent requests for load recipes that it would be cool (and convenient) that the CG moderators would create a "recipe" section dedicated to just that.
For those that want to share and those in need of guidance.

Any thoughts on this from the seasoned members and CG moderators?

Can't say I'm a seasoned member over here, but here's my take on that.

Trusting someone else's loads can be dangerous if you don't verify them yourself first. For example, I have two loads, one for .38 Spl and another for .45 Colt, that are way above SAAMI specs. These are my "Magnum" loads, and I have specific reasons for doing this. As long as you're careful in what type of gun you use these in (.357 Mag and .454 Casull, respectively), you're fine. But don't try my hot .45 Colt load in your Colt SAA.

I would suggest that for such a section, it be "members only", i. e. those who have signed up for the forum. This is a safety issue. If people really want to see these custom loads that we've developed, they're likely handloaders themselves and understand the risks involved. Such folks typically will gladly take the time to become a member here and probably have, or eventually will have, something to contribute of their own. What we don't want is the search-bots steering some inexperienced individual who's too lazy to pick up a couple of reloading manuals to these custom loads and blowing up their gun, themselves, or someone else.

Additionally, I would strongly suggest a standard format for presenting such load data, and to enforce strict adherence to that format. Again, a safety issue. Something along the likes that Ammosmith.com has.

With all that said, and with those caveats sufficiently addressed, personally I think a "Load Recipes" section would be a GREAT idea.

Cowboy, very good point and yes... safety is priority one. As you mentioned (and I neglected to) that this should be only for members of Calguns.
I think also it should be info that is already published by an established bullet or powder manufacture so that someone that say.. has already three load books, but not the one that covers the particular bullet in question can easily find or request the info without doing extensive searching in the forum.
Hence a section just for "recipes".

Also, if anyone posts a "custom" recipe, it should be stated by the one posting it so the person looking up recipes can make their own decision to take the potential risk or stick with established "safe" loads.

My motivation for this idea is mostly based on the fact that I can sometimes be difficult to find an answer already posted to the forum when it comes to load recipes when they can be buried among hundreds of other posts.

+1 for a recipe section, however it needs to have rules that mandate the disclosure of all components and the gun it was developed in.

          Something along these lines, perhaps?

Subject: The name of the cartridge. For example if its a 308 Winchester please post the subject as 308 Winchester not 308 or 308 Winnie.

          Body information: Include the following

          Caliber:

          Bullet Weight:
          Bullet Type:
          Bullet Brand:
          Primer:
          Case:

          Powder:
          Powder Charge:
          OAL:

          Gun Information

          Brand:
          Model:
          Barrel Length:
          Twist Rate:

          (note: shamelessly stolen--er, "borrowed"--from another forum. :-)

I like this idea. The format thing is a good thought, keeps everything organized.

yeah, if there was a way to create a pre-formatted form that a member can fill out and then have it automatically submitted into a search-able database by caliper.. that would be sweet!

There's a way...but not for the forum I don't think. If someone had a server, and came up with a database, we could link it on CalGuns...but that's a lot of work. Maybe for donations lol

I don't see the problem with people posting what they like. As with any reloading data, you need to start at the minimum load recommended by the manufacturer of the recommended products and you should be safe. As always, it is still a risk and you must be reponsible for using the data appropriately.

If it doesn't end up getting posted here you can always visit shooting competition forums, snipers hide, CMP, etc. as they all have a wealth of information that has been discussed at great length.

Major downside I see is the search suckage we have here. Other then that it'd be nice to see how others do it, and with the format idea above it'd make researching results from individual components easier also.
