Pre-drilling might have prevented the splitting and I would say that the table to the left in the pic, with the bins on it in the background, would make a good loading bench.........looks to be sturdy enough.

It would, but it's my mom's so it's being used as...storage lol. I'm gonna get this thing in my room before too long.
