    Reloading for Remington 223

For those that reload.... What are your favorite loads for 223 Remington and what barrel twist are you shooting out of? Just curious, because I'm going to start reloading for it.

75gr Hornady, 77gr Sierra, and 77gr Noslers all shoot great. I shoot all 3 and it's not difficult to find a load that shoots accurately with any of these three bullets.

80gr Sierras are probably the easiest heavy 22cal bullets to develop a good load for. Berger 80gr VLDs are considered the best 80gr out there, but it takes time to find a load for them. I have yet to shoot 80gr Noslers at distance, but I wrote a review of the 80gr Nosler factory 2nds and they seemed to do well at short distance (200 yards):

I shoot 1 in 7" for competition and 1 in 8" in my practice barrel.

If you're a slow twist barrel owner, go with with 69 Sierras or lower.

I use Varget for my competition (200 and 300yds) loads and Vithavouri(SP??) for my 600yd loads.. I use Sierra 69SMK's and 80gr SMK's

barrel is a 1-8" DPMS SS barrel

Now.. for blasting loads in my other OLL's I'm using 25.0gr H4895 and a 62gr SS109 bullet... I plan on switching to RL-15 for my blasting loads soon. These barrels are 1-7" or 1-9's

.223 is one of the easiest rounds to load for

        my favorites:

24.5 gr. RL15, 75 gr. Hornady boat tail, Remington 7.5 primer
23.5 gr. H4895, 75 gr. Hornady boat tail, CCI 400 primer
24 gr. Varget, Sierra 77, CCI 400 primer

These are with either Lake City, or IMI cases. I've got a 20", 1:8 Wylde chambered Lothar Walther barrel, along with a 26" "spacegun" upper, 1:7.

Any recommendations for a 1-9 twist?

You could try Sierra 69 with around 24gr of Varget which is a safe load for pretty much any AR. I've never used this load before, but I know lots of people who have (in a 1 in 8") with good success. 24gr of Varget is well under max for 69gr in .223.

I don't have any experience with 1-9". Every AR I've owned since my very 1st back in 1993 has been a 1 in 7" or 1 in 8".

Had better results with 62 grains with a 1X9 twist with Varget: 25 grains. OAL: 2.245

68 grains showed decent groups at 100 yards. 24.5 grains (Varget)

Exclusively using Nosler Custom Comp 77gr HPBT.

Haven't finalized on powder and weight yet.

So far, I have loaded with Alliant Reloader 15 (RL15), Ramshot TAC, and VV N540.

I'll continue to post results on my load development thread.

I have been loading 55g FMJBT with IMR 4895 24.2gn, 16" 1x9. Works great as my plinking load. I want to try some different powder next time around.

Whats a safe load to start out with using Ramshot and a 55grain bullet out of a 1/7 twist?

Ramshot doesnt post online, you have to call for a catalog.

Click the "Load Guide" link (left side of page). This opens a PDF. Go to Page 5. Look halfway down the right-side column for .223 loads using TAC.

I also have some extra printed RAM TAC load guides at home that Midway sent me when I bought 8lbs. If you want one, PM me an address.

EDIT: Oooops. Looks like that PDF doesn't have any 55gr loads coming out of a 1:7 barrel. The lowest they go from 1:7 is 68gr.

They do have some 55gr loads, but they're from 1:12 barrels.

I like to use Guatamulen Brass from Weidner Reloading ($90)/ 1000. Good, solid brass that actually cycles better than Winchester and Remington in my case. Also, doesn't expand easily and rated really well.

                          Accurate 2230 25 gr.

Nosler 55gr - this is all I use for now.

Winchester SRP (never had a primer failure)

                          1:8 and 1:9 barrels.

I shoot short range 100-200yards. I can get 2inch groupings. I don't shoot for competition, just for fun.
