    .22lr Ballistics question...

My Pheonix Arms HP22 is picky about ammo (surprise, surprise...i know). It loves CCI mini mags, and becomes a "bolt action" pistol with bulk ammo. In the interest of keeping cost low I'm wondering if Winchester Super-X .22lr ammo is as reliable as the mini mags? I know people have said that if you use too high of velocity ammo you can break the gun...BUT, mini mags are 40gr, 1275fps and the Super-X's are 37gr 1330fps. Do you think that the lighter weight but higher fps equals out to the same force on the gun as a mini mag? Anyone have any experience with the Super-X's in an HP22? They cost about 2 bucks less, and i'd like to save as much as possible. (any ways to get it to eat federal bulk will be EXTREMELY appreciated!!!!!!)

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

I'm not a ballistics expert, but I'm pretty good with math.

If you calculate the kinetic energy of each round E=(.5)*M*(V^2)
You get that those two loads are within one ft-lb of each other.
The mini mags come out to 144ft-lb and the Super-X comes to 145ft-lb.

That seems like an almost negligible difference, so I don't think you should be worried about that.

That said, I'm not a lawyer/ballistics expert/engineer (yet)/whatever, so my advice is worth what you paid for it.

So...i guess it would be safe to assume that the force exerted on the gun itself is about the same with both rounds right? or does that math only apply to the down range ballistics???

thanks for the help Turo, I'm terrible at math!

Most of the bulk ammo are HPs and the 40gr MiniMags are RNs. I am guessing that this might have more to do with your problem than the energy of the round. But hey it's a $140 pistol, if it works great with MiniMags, you're still a winner.

I've tried all sorts of ammo and it's not just HP's. For some reason the bulk ammo just doesn't run well. Not sure if it's too dirty or what, but the extractor just doesn't seem to grab them and pull them all the way out so it jams. Maybe it's just that mini mags have larger rims....who knows.

I did a little more research and found some people that had luck with Remington Gold Bullet bulk packs (surprising, i know) and Federal AutoMatch Bulk ammo. The bulk ammo I was using before was Western (VERY dirty) and Federal 550 Value Pack (not AutoMatch). The local Wal-Mart had some of each of the AutoMatch and Gold Bullet packs when I picked up the Super-X, so i think I'll go back and get some, then find out how well they work personally and report back. If nothing else, my Mossberg 702 will eat them up, it's not picky about ANYTHING!!

Found more info...i guess it's the hyper velocity stuff that destroys the gun. 1330 fps isn't considered hyper velocity is it? it should say hyper velocity on it if it is right?

Here's some generally interesting 22LR data:

You can get every little information about.22 Rimfire Ballistics by having a look at the descriptive table that we had defined on this page.

thanks gorblimey...i'm going to keep that for sure! I think anything that hovers around the same muzzle foot pounds as the mini mags (140) should work fine....and now i know what those are
