Come out and play with us (across the course, mid-range, long-range), and you will quickly discover "the need for extreme precision".

Sometimes the rules specify what calibers one has to choose from. A .223 bolt gun with the right bullet, will keep up with a .308 bolt gun better than most think.

      Ammo availability...

      .223 & 5.56mm can be found anywhere. 22-250, notsomuch...

I like 22-250 and I plan on building a 22-250 Mauser someday but I definitely can appreciate the attraction to a .223 bolt gun...

If you only have one .223 (or 5.56mm) rifle, it would be better to just neck size. Your brass will last a lot longer.

...back to the OP's question; I think I'm going to try a set of those RCBS X-dies. It keeps you from having to trim after an initial trimming. I need a new .308 die, so I'll let you know how they work.
Yes and No. If its a bolt gun he's reloading for I would say yes "neck size" definitely makes your brass last longer, but any auto loading cartridge (AR's, Mini 14's, M1 Garands you get the point) must always be "FULL LENGHT RESIZED" this is very important for these rapid feeding rifles which really beat up the brass and eject it two county's over.

If you are loading for just one gun I like forester because you can get them honed from forester for $10 to the neck tension you want. Best buy on the market if you ask me.

              If for an AR, Dillon.

If for a bolt rifle, Redding FL Competition dies.

And while 22-250 is great, it definitely is more cost effective to shoot 223...especially for position practice for my 308.

Wow, I am the only one that uses small base dies for 223?

Lee full length has worked just fine for me for past 6 years. Fire formed is fine if your gonna use the rounds strictly in the same gun but if you share ammo full length resizing is the way to go.

Most 223 dies made since the early 90s are small base dimensioned.
The only reason to buy specific "small base" dies are if you are using some 60's to 80's dies.

FWIW, Dillon dies are small base dies. They just don't need to advertise it and...what Randall said.
