Is "bad ammo" a new problem?

I did a search, but no results so I'm asking here. I started shooting again after a 20 year break. There seem to be a lot of comments about ammo misfires in rimfire and FTE/FTE in center fire. Is this something that just started happening or just not written about in the past?

I think as demand grow's production and quality blows...especially at Remington yes this missfire thing has been going on for a while now.

I have not heard anything of such but does such misfires only applies to bulk packed ones? I would think that the 50 and 100 round count boxes would be more reliable due to tighter QC.

        Really...news to me!

re centerfire 9mm and 45 ACP--

In the past year I have personally shot about 2k or more of pistol ammo. Some were factory reloads and the rest cheap factory ball ammo. I probably only have about two or three failures to cycle on my Glock 19 and about six or seven stovepipes while by 1911 was brand new. Neither seems to malfunction now and still use cheapo ammo. Mind you, I do not mean WOLF, I mean Blazer Aluminum Case and Brass Case as well as PMC (ok not that cheap), plus the Miwall reloads.

SOOOOO....try for yourself, personally I would not consider ex military ammo or the cheapest of the WOLF but others may disagree.

Well, I had a bad round of top shelf factory .22lr (ELLEY) ammo rupture back in '86. I could have lost my eye! I'm sure that it is no a new thing. Like anything else, quality control can be an issue. I'll bet that there was a higher percent of "bad ammo" being produced 100 years ago then there is today. But, today there are a bunch of newer shooters who think that ammo and firearms should work as well as they do in video games.

We did not have the Internet 20 years ago to share things like this. It is simply much easier for people to post about such incidents. Making it seems as though this is no a common thing.

Thanks for all the comments. I guess the word gets around faster now.
Funny, all those old time gun magazine writers never seemed to have mis-fires, etc. all they did was tell stories about how they had to put 6 rounds into a dik-dik!

Do I even want to know what a dik-dik is? I am guessing not.

I recently bought some bulk Winchester ammo at WM. One box of 500 X-Pert and another box of 555. Different in labeling and one box looks copper plated but the specs are the same on both. I had about 3 FTF out of over 500 round the other day, not bad for bulk .22lr.

What I did notice in both boxes of ammo was that the bullets are slightly loose in the case. You can wiggle them. And not just some of them, most of them. Is this a QC issue? They seem to work fine but I'm wondering if there is a safety issue with them and does it effect accuracy.

About 2/3 of the way through my first bulk pack of the much maligned Remington Golden Bullets. After getting all the gummed up peeling PAINT out of the receiver of my brand new 10/22 they've performed just fine. One "click" out of a few hunnert rounds or so.

I've come across loose bullets in the .22 cases ever since I started shooting back in the mid 1960's. They fired, but I don't remember if they were" fliers" or not .

Someone recently ran across a Remington factory round whose brass neck was all torn up. Good thing he looked at the ammo before he loaded it up.

I trust my reloads just as much as I would factory ammo, since I made 'em. Massad Ayoob felt the same way about his handloads.
