Good Deals On 9mm...

Hey guys.

I have a friend who's up for Major in the USAFR and she wants to get a few more decorations before her board, just to be on the safe side. She hasn't earned her Expert Small-Arms Marksmanship Ribbon, so if she can get that, it might set her apart from the crowd. I told her that I'd help her practice and get ready for the test but I'll need a lot more 9mm because I haven't had my 92FS for very long.

Long story short; where are the good deals on 9mm these days?

The Air Force uses Frangible rounds now, so either that, or Mil-spec ball will suffice. I'd rather we had the frangible because that's what she'll be using during the test but I know that it tends to be a little more costly than plain, ball ammo. I don't mind buying bulk, so if it's a good deal on a big, battle pack, that's fine.

I don't know where the deals are these days, I roll my own. But the last factory 9mm I bought was CCI Blazer Brass, I shot about a half case of it for a class and it functioned fine. Just your standard 115gr Ball stuff. I paid out the nose for it, but it was in the middle of the ammo scare.

Cabelas has their 'Herters' branded ammo, which is just rebranded Wolf I think. If I recall correctly, it's pretty cheap.

Availability shouldn't be too much of a problem these days...

I don't think the type of ammo will really matter (frangible vs ball).

I think the furthest distance the Air Force shoots the M9 is 25 yards.

Especially if she isn't familiar with shooting in general, the fundamentals are going to be a bigger factor than anything else.

Buy whatever ammo is cheapest/readily available. Walmart has ammo as low as $10 for a box of 50 rounds. There is plenty of literature out there on shooting fundamentals. Here are a few links.

The Federal 9mm at Walmart is actually pretty good ammo. That and the Blazer Brass that they used to carry is what I shoot the most of.

For good shooting fundamentals, the NRA Basic Pistol coursebook is a good read. The big deals here are firearm safety and the mantra, "sight alignment...trigger squeeze...sight alignment...trigger squeeze...."
