Why do they sell 45acp like crack?

I don't get it. Every Walmart within an hour of me has ammo shelves filled up to the top with every caliber except for .45. I talk to the people there and they say that they get 1 or 2 boxes in a shipment if that. My local hardware store has WWB in stock, plenty of it, at $61/box. Big 5 which is overpriced anyway is out too. I'm tired of roaming around looking. I wish I had room to reload. I might have to tell my wife the dinner table is spoken for. It seems like it's a pretty popular caliber, so why the constant shortage?

I was wondering the same thing. $61 a box!!
The last box I got was from big5, it was $30 and I thought that was too much.

Wow...prices have really gone up. (I never check, as I reload).

I was playing with a HANDLOADING COST CALCULATOR (shipping and hazmat fees included), and I am paying something like $8.50 per 50-rounds.

      Or $171.50 per 1000-rounds.

Kinda makes me appreciate my reloading press.

But then again, like someone told me when I first started reloading almost 15 years ago, "Reloading does not save you money. You will still spend the same amount of money. The catch is that you will be able to shoot a lot more for the amount".

No truer words have crossed this ole shooters ears.

Right you are. I need to sneak a press in here somehow. It'll only be worse next year.

i pick up a box (25) of remington golden saber 185 gr .45 ACP at Big 5 every other week for hoarding purposes. it's usually on sale for $29.00 when i stop in. no matter which Big 5 i go to, their supply is limited to one or two boxes. believe it or not... the price on the .45 ACP is competitive for a storefront operation; especially since i can't find the golden saber in .45 ACP at most gun shops in my part of southern california.

It's because .45 is the shizz.

                  Wow that calculator is great!
                  I'm only paying 5 CENTS/round for .45! Yipee!
That's the great thing about not having to buy brass and casting your own bullets!

Damn.......thats some expensive ammo. Reloading will always be up to 40-50% cheaper than off the shelf stuff.

I've got a ton of once fired .45 ACP brass, new plated bullets in stock if anyone is looking to purchase components to start reloading.

back when I lived in apartments with serious space resrictions I would keep all my reloading stuff in a box and setup on a Sat. afternoon at the dining room table and reload and have enough for several trips to the range .

Since I got in to reloading I didn't know that things were so rough with the 45 ammo. And the prices, OMG!!!

I just stopped by wallyworld the other day and saw that WWB 100rd packs were going for $36-37 for 45 but they didn't have any on the shelf. They had EVERYTHING else. Police typically use 40sw, military uses 9mm. So perhaps the mfg are focusing their operations on those markets and not tooling up as much for 45???

These posts are always shocking to me. I remember WWB 100pk 45's selling for $22 at walmart... then when it went to $24 I started reloading because I thought that was outrageous.
