    M1 Garand / M1A Powder Question

I'm thinking of getting into reloading and I wonder if the powder for a M1 Garand will work for the M1A as well

I'm trying to stock less and do more

Yea, there are powders that you can use in both 308 and 30-06.
4895, 4064, Varget, etc to name a few.

Just stick with 4895, either Hodgdon or IMR.

For plinking purposes, you can't go wrong with BLC-2. It's fairly inexpensive and it'll give you some decent groups.

Yes you can get a powder to do both. Ramshot TAC works well as does any of the 4895 powders and several others.

Accurate 2520 is my favorite for the garand. It's a ball powder and works well in M1A 308 loads as well as 223. It's a great all around powder.

I had extensive experiments with several powder, bullets, cartridge cases, primers combination for my 308 Win cartridge, for about 1 1/2 years. I ended up with IMR4064 powder for the best results. Not much experiments with 30-06. And 223 Remington with heavy bullet (69+ grains) I had good results with IMR4895.

IMR 4895 and IMR 4064 are both the right burning rate to protect the Garand. I use 4064 because of the better availability.

I used IMR 4064 first because I read that Middleton Tompkins, 6-times National Highpower Champion used it and I figured if it was good enough for him it was good enough for me. I got outstanding performance in my .308 match rifle and M1 with fairly mild, but very accurate powder charges, and 168gr Sierra Matchking bullets. I used that powder for 25 years. I did add IMR 4350 to my .308 loads for 1,000 yard shooting with 190gr Sierra Matchkings.

What he said. Both rifles were designed around 4895 and it works fine.
