Some a-hole bought the last non-magnetic mil-surp from century arms....30K of it, the greedy bastard!. I reccomend outdoor marksman PMC bronze 150 grain and an adjustable gas plug. This is new ammo and pretty cheap($7.95 a box of 20) and is the best deal going that I know of.

        MidwayUSA carries them...

It allows you to adjust the amount of pressure acting on the rifles op-rod so you can use heavier bullets or ammo with slower powder than is recomended for the Garand.

But you should still check any new commercial ammo you buy with a magnet first. It would be a shame to pay for the gas plug, pay for new commercial ammo, and still end up with steel jacketed ammo. With the cost of copper being so high and with U.S. ammo companies contracting out with foreign manufacturers for some of their "economy" lines of ammo, you might find steel jackets in commercial ammo too.

Some Lake City is non-magnetic but good luck finding it. There was a debate not long ago about Korean ammo being non-magnetic which I was a part of. I have only shot the KA headstamped ammo in clips which is corrosive. Someone said it was non-magnetic but myself and others claimed it was. Well, I stand corrected and I apologize to the poster who said it wasn't. I dug out my last remaining bandoleers a few weeks ago and decided to test them again. What do you know! In the same bandoleer, I found some clips loaded with magnetic ammo and some loaded with non-magnetic! Definately more magnetic than non but there was some. I think I found 6 clips out of 2.5 bandoleers that were non-magnetic. Kinda makes you wonder what the Koreans were doing when they loaded the bandoleers and the ammo. I didn't notice any of the clips to have mixed rounds in them. It was either magnetic or not.

can this cause any damage to the gun? how do you go about making sure that is is adjusted correctly? is it by guess or do you use a pressure gauge of some sort???

If the bullet weight is too high or if the powder burn rate is too slow then the pressure in the barrel will be too high when the bullet passes over the gas port. This can damage the op-rod after a while.

I don't really know how to use the Schuster adjustable gas plug, but I imagine that it involves first opening the plug up almost all the way, firing some test shots, and then gradually closing the plug down and testing at each setting until the rifle just begins to function in semi-automatic mode. You probably have to repeat this procedure any time you change ammo types.

You can always get a set of these. They worked great for me.

I would suggest adjusting it the other way. Close down the plug all the way and slowly open it until the rifle cycles reliably. Then don't open it any more. But then, I don't use one of these and I shoot Korean and Greek surplus.

They say that the back of the receiver can also crack from the bolt slamming into it too hard. The adjustable gas plug is much cheaper than a new op-rod anyway and would seem to give you more flexability.

I am using the second smallest plug in my garand, it works perfect with all ammo EXCEPT milsurp which does not cycle the bolt properly (it works!!). speak up if you find some cheap ammo. The bronze PMC I reccomended is non-magnetic.

CMP has non magnetic, just got 960 rds from them. You do need to follow the rules for the purchase of said ammo though.
