So I am reading on arfcom that some people are saying that ammo will come down in price once the manufacturers dont have to worry about making ammo for the war in the sand box. That the markets will be flooded with surplus. I thought Klinton signed a bill banning our gubment from selling us surplus. Is there a way to skirt that?

I've never heard of a ban. A lot of vendors carry M855 although they don't always have it in stock.

It is true that the war is sucking up ammo manufacturing capacity and affecting prices. It stands to reason that when we get out there will be more ammo available. Whether that is surplus or regular commercial ammo, I don't know.

Yeah there is a prohibition from selling US military surplus ammunition to civilians. This is why GI Brass sells recovered components: pull down bullets, cases and powder.

If you look closely, the ammo you see on the shelves is Federal/Lake City XM193 or XM855, NOT Lake CityM193 or M855.

A subtle difference that makes a world of difference.

XM193 may be made on the same lines as the military M193, but the fact is that the XM193 lot numbers have not been accepted by the Army Inspector General's office as meeting military specifications. If it's not signed off, it's not milspec. Since it was never accepted, it's not military surplus.

It could be something as menial as an average of three out of every one hundred rounds in a lot not having properly sealed necks.

It could conceivably be inconsistent accuracy that doesn't meet the minimum specifications (4 MOA is the minimum acceptable)

And this is based on what? We just had a 33% recent price drop on 5.45x39 surplus ammo.

there's a lot of reasons for price fluctuation. The recent influx of 5.56x39 may be because of supply reasons- as in the ship finally docked and cleared customs. Then again, there might've been production issues such as the QA/QC problems as mentioned on sksboard and surplusrifle forum. Don't forget though 5.56x39 is being replaced by 5.8x42 in China and RU Fed are moving back to 7.62x39 as with AK103 for example. For ref, see worldguns.ru.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...ammo prices will come down when we get out of Iraq.

There was a story on the local news tonight that the San Jose police are having trouble getting ammo. In fact police departments all over the country are having this problem. Guess why. Because the Federal government gets first dibs on ammo manufacturing capacity.

Remember when people were paying $300 for a regular old AR-15 receiver that costs $99 now?
