    How do you destroy primers?

I have 3 live rounds I found, a 30-06, a 30-30 and a 30 Luger. I want to make them into keychains for the nephews. I have no firearms chambered for any of these. I can extract the bullets w/o problems but what about the primers? It seems advisable to inactivate them quite thoroughly before using the decapping die. I'm thinking of filling the empty casings with some fluid and letting it soak. Water? Alcohol? Acetone? Hoppes #9? Boiled boar urine? Any advice?

    Thanks!

If you have a universal decapping die, just push them out -- safety glasses advised -- If you have a decapping punch, probably not a good idea to whack 'em out.

Soak them in hot soapy water for an hour or so, that has worked for me.

WD40 will kill the primer. Then decap with eye protection with care. Be careful!

I don't know how old your nephews are, but be careful if they bring them to school...

                This.

Modern primers are way better made for oil or WD40 to render them ineffective. It may, it may not. Just to test this once, I have dropped one in engine oil overnight and primed an empty case with it in the morning. Still went bang.

For boxer primer, I usually fill the case with WD40 or CRC and let it soak for at least overnight, then dicap.

Wen it comes to berdan primer or rimfire, I simply toach the case (of course after removing the bullet and powder) to pop it.

In ether case, just be careful.

Just punch them out. IF you go off it will only be a small pop and there is NO danger. Safety glass are suggested anyway. The only one that surprised me was a 50bmg primer at 3AM one morning and it did not even wake up my daughter in the next room. People make a big voodoo thing about it and that is not needed. I have done many, many and only a small number even poped with me not even being real gentle. If I am gentle I have even resused the primers with no problem(but only plinking ammo).
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

WD40 was designed to penetrate. Motor oil is designed to coat. I believe this is why motor oil didn't kill your primer.

I've tested the WD40 stuff....wouldn't count on it to kill the primer...

Times are different. Even toy guns or bullets can get him kicked out.

Just punch them out with a decapper. If they pop there is not enough pressure to do anything.

^^^ This. Just go slow with the decapper. I've pushed out hundreds of 'em.
