greater need for 9mm or .45???

Going to start reloading for sale very soon (and yes i'll get all the proper licenses and what not) but i can only afford a setup for one caliber right now....the money made from sales of one will fund the necessary items for the other later on. So, since Calguns has been so good to me i'll probably sell my first few good batches here.

So what is everyone looking for? 9mm or .45acp? I know there are plenty of people who want both, but I need to hear from the people who would actually buy 250-500-1000 rounds of either one. Once a few batches are sold I'll offer both, and after a few more batches i'll add other popular calibers, so help me get started by picking the most popular one now so that the others will come quicker.....thanks!

I recently saw a video of a 650 with case feeder and an RCBS bullet feeder. The thing flew.

From a reloading standpoint, there's more money to be saved with home grown .45 over 9mm compared to buying factory, so I would think that would be the place to start.

Might be a good idea to get a liability insurance.

How much money do you think you'll make? I crunched some numbers for you.
              Assuming 9mm:
              $100 for 8lbs of powder
              $80 for 1000 bullets
              $150 for 5000 primers
Free brass (reusing what you have or picking up at range)

At these numbers the cost of a box of 50 rounds of 9mm comes out to $5.99.

But if you input the price of buying new brass ($150/1k) the costs jumps $13.49

If you buy used brass for $40/1K then the cost is right about at $8.00.

So assuming you load with used brass the best I can figure is you could load around $8 per box of 50.

Let's say you sell them for $10.00 a box. So $2.00 profit per box. You will be able to reload 50 in about 10 minutes.

So I guess you could make about $12 an hour assuming I calculated everything correctly (slim chance of that)

The only problem I think you'll run into is selling them for $10 a box when walmart sells them for not much more (and that's factory ammo not reloads). I certainly wouldn't pay that, but then again I wouldn't shoot reloads in any of my guns that I didn't reload myself.

Don't mean to sound pessimistic, just wanted to throw some numbers out there to help you get an idea up what you'll be up against. Of course I didn't factor in any of the costs of the reloading equipment or licenses.

              Hope this helps.

                  I should have said,
"to sound pessimistic, but not mean to"

But that is also one of the things he'll be up against. Lot's of people would rather not shoot reloads. In fact I believe it voids 99% of gun warranties.

So if people are willing to void there gun's warranty I think he'll have to be selling them for a pretty good price. Maybe there's a way to reload for less than I portrayed above, but I'm not aware of it.

Really I just wanted to bring this stuff to light so that the OP didn't spend a lot on a setup and then be out of luck.

I reload my own 45 and 9mm. If the price is right I think OP could make a good profit. I wouldn't shoot it out of a Wilson combat custom gun but a glock? Sure its nothing special.
OP, I think you'll be better off reloading 45, the stuff is more expensive off the shelf than 9mm and where I am you simply can't find it. I was buying powder this weekend and the store was selling brass. They had sold out of 45 in 10 minutes. There just seems to be more demand for it.

I am sure there is a way to bring the price down if you are serious. But most likely there will be a lot of leg work and paper work to be done. Don't think this can be a garage reloading operation. To get the prices down you would not be ordering in regular 8lb jugs or 5k primers at a time, think bigger. Because you will be storing bigger quantities you will most likely have to get a commercial location due to fire and storage ordinances. Then you also have to factor that rental cost of the commercial space, licensing cost (not just a ATF reloading license), and then insurance. Think it over, it's not just as simple as reloading one caliber at a time and trying to make enough money to move on. It is best to find some investors if you are really serious and start getting the paper work done now. The problem is that most people sense that the ammo shortage is over with Walmart selling WWB 9mm at around $10, many will stray away from reloads. MiWall reloads compared to Walmart prices are not even worth the slight discount. Also you must factor in the new handgun ammo laws that will go into effect on Feb 2011, it is not going to help your case and with that coming in soon there will be more reloaders loading at around $0.13 a round or $13.00 for 100 of 147 FMJ 9mm. Think it through, and good luck.

thanks for the advice.....not trying to go comercial or anything yet, just trying to put a few extra buck in my pocket every now and then. Where I am, it's hard to find either one, and the best price I've seen for 9mm is $14 for 50 rounds of Federal. I know getting people to pay the same price for reloads as they would for factory new might be a challenge, but finding the quantity that I could load is an even greater challenge....I'll keep everyone posted on how things go
