I have just purchased a CVA Hawken percussion cap in .54 Cal, can anyone suggest a starting load ??

if i recall my BP days 1 grain for each caliber so .54 would be 54 grains to start. i use to load mine to 110 with a round ball but i cant recall what a maxi was?

I load mine to 60gr equivalent of Pyrodex for an easy-shooting plinking round using round balls.

I do 110 for thumpers

Starting load was 90 grains of FFG and my hunting load was 120 grains in my .54.

Starting load will depend on several factors. Not the least of which is what type of projectile you are using. If you ever get around Agua Dulce (not too far from Magic Mountain), I can give you a lesson and maybe even, bring a few of my frontstuffers out of retirement.

BTW, I took my first deer with a .53cal round ball, .020 patch and 90 grains of Goex FFg.

Blasphamy! You're going to Hell!!!! Real BP is the ONLY way to go!

In my Hawken

In my hawken I use 50grains of powder for 25yrds. 55 grains for 50yrds, and adjust on up from there. In my TC Hawken it is recommended at a 110grain max load for normal use. And that is for long shots and hunting. I use a .490 round ball with a wet cloth knife cut patch. Do not load straight from the powder container/horn to the barrel use a measure.

I belong to a local BP club out of Solano County. And have shot BP since I was 12.
