    Help with 9mm round

I'm a new gun owner (G19) and need to get some rounds. I know very little about rounds. I couldn't even tell you what a good deal is, let alone the "good" brands of rounds. I know I could probably go to Wal-Mart and get some. Is this the best deal around? What is the good brands? What is a good price? I plan on going to the range a lot this summer to get some experience and become a better shooter. I need the best discount round around. I don't mind getting a dirty round and cleaning my gun more often. I just need some guidance on where to go from here.

    Thanks all,
    from a new gun brother...JL

Hello and welcome to Calguns. Nice sig you got there.

If you want to buy 9mm local, i think the Winchester White box(WWB) 9mm from Wal-mart is probably gonna be the best buy.

If you dont mind ordering online and don't mind about poly coated Steel cased Wolf..

    Wolf- 1k for $124 + Shipping

I've had good luck with Sellier and Bellot and Fiocci 9mm for budget ammo. I've shot 2000 S & B rounds with friends at shooting school through various guns. No problems. Best deal I've seen is at a gun show. I find Winchester White box from Walmart to be functional as well with if a bit dirtier. Winchester brass is worth a bit more if you choose to keep it and sell or reload. you can recoup ~$15 per thousand if you save it and sell it.

The Winchester Value Pack at Walmart is the benchmark consumer 9mm practice ammo in terms of price, quality, and availability. It's not the best but its not the worst.

BTW, your GLOCK 19 is never ammo sensitive so it can digest pretty much all brands. So if you find something cheaper than the Winchester Value Pack at Walmart, go for it.

Stay away from reloads unless you do your own reloads or you know the actual person who did the reloads.

also check your local ranges, for 9mm it should be around 80 bucks per 500 rounds. this is usually the easiest way to get cheep ammo. if your shooting 25 yards, reloads are all good! happy shooting

I've been looking for that too! The old shool UMC yellow box is hard to find. It seems Remington re-packed them as the new Mega Pack (250 rounds) but again, I rarely see them at Walmart.

FWIK, the 50-round box old shool UMC yellow box is now the 50-round box Remington UMC in the green and white box. There is also a 50-round box Remington Express in the green and yellow box. I'm not sure if the color of the box mean anything to distinguish the quality of the UMC and the Remington. 'Could be a marketing ploy.

I have no first hand experience on their ammo but you may want to read on...(not much)

I've been buying CCI Blazer Brass at Wal-Mart for a little cheaper than 100 rd. WWB. Every bit helps.

<Whispering> Shhhhh! That's the best kept secret at Walmart. It's $6.97 for 50 rounds vs WWB for $14.56 for 100 rounds.

It's undistinguishly cheaper and hotter than the WWB but always out of stock. If you see a box, buy it.</Whispering>

If you want some good name-brand defense ammo to go with that practice ammo, it's hard to get a better deal than this:

250 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 9mm 124Gr +P for $67 shipped, or $13.40 per box of 50. Outdoor Marksman, one of the better-priced places online, charges more than that for boxes of 20.

To find more in different lot sizes, go to gunbroker and search on gold dot 9mm.

I put a mag or two of my preferred defense ammo through every time I go to the range to make sure there are no issues with it. Keeps costs down and reliability up.

                            Ammo suggestions

Be aware that at some ranges, Wolf steel-cased ammuntion of any caliber is not allowed. That's the case at a local indoor range but not an issue at my outdoor range. Check this out before you do a major buy.

Ammo varies from caliber to caliber, with some brands excelling as .45 ACP and mediocre at 9mm. You'll sort that out as you go. Some brands are easy choices, especially for target practice. Here are a couple suggestions:

CCI Blazer (either aluminum or brass case; alum is cheaper but not reloadable)
                            Remington UMC

Miwall reloads from Outdoor Sportsman are a very good deal, same as Wolf prices but without the steel.

So I went to the local Wal-Mart (Fremont, CA) and they don't sell ammo. What?? Are you kidding me. They showed me an aisle with BB's. I asked them if they ever heard of a Glock BB gun. They said "no." I said, "exactly, now please tell me if any of the surrounding Wal-Marts sell ammo for real guns."

Anyway, long story short...I won't be getting ammo from Wal-Mart. I'm kind of worried about buying ammo online and having it mailed to me. Should I be worried??
