    new cleaner Unique

I bought a pound of this to try out since I think I'll be setting myself up for 12 ga reloading soon and wanted a mix of powders for pistol calibers.

this stuff throws a lot less smoke than WW231 or WST. I kind of like it. The new formulation is supposed to be cleaner and the old loading recipes are still compatible. My 230 gr loads at 6.2 grains loads felt stout. time to get a chrono, but an older lyman book says you can go higher, the alliant website says I'm at the top. seems all powder companies have lawyered up there most current recipes compared to the 1991 lyman book I have.

the downside is the large flat flakes can be a bit touchy to meter out compared to 231.

I have yet to try it with 200gr semi wadcutters, but I hear they work great at 5.8. looking for that low residue load for IDPA, this might be it.

I'm assuming you are loading for 45 acp. Might want to try Regular (not Univesal or International) Clays, you will throw about half the charge weight in comparison to Unique for the same performance. People tell me it is quite clean. Most of these people shoot it for IDPA and IPSC. Unique can be used in shotshells, but it is mainly for heavier/faster loads. Clays will tend to be good for 2 3/4 and 3 dram 1 1/8 ounce loads.

If you want to burn Unique, go for it. It can be used for a wide variety of things, but is not ideal for most of them. It's the all around, use one powder for everything.. powder

I agree on using regular Hodgons Clays for the 1911.. I've been using it for over 15yrs now..... wall full of PPC trophies to boot......I use to use Clays for my 12Ga Sporting Clays loads...
