RCBS 1010 Did I buy junk?

Wow, Ive been having so much fun learning and building custom rounds that I thought it was time to procure a decent scale for what I would hope is a long term quality one time purchase. Straight out of the box, I thought this thing is kinda pot metal hoke and not so straight or solid.

It seems to have several different zeros depending where the beam comes to rest. The worst of which is when the copper counter balance touches the guide wall. Inspection of the shoulder balance exposes wobbly little pieces of plastic that don't seem to rest in the same place every time so I inserted some card stock to secure them in place. This probably defeated some purpose and it still did not fall to rest in the same place every time. I started inspecting the beam and it appeared to have a slight curve, so... I gave it more curve to pull the counter away from and center the guide. Also had to tweak the copper counter so that it would align straight between the magnets. Okay, now it seems to be returning to zero after no less than three bouncing s of the beam. I'm thinking this is more bs than I can handle at this point but I thought I'd try some check weights which only made the frustration worse as they registered at least +/-.5g out in any weight until I diligently bounced the beam 3 to 4 times and it would finally come into zone.

Is it normal to have to tweak this thing into preforming as it should?
Tweak more?
Time to return the thing?

If it's new it shouldn't need any tweeking. I still have a 5-0-5 that I bought in 1981 that is still as accurate as the day I bought it and checks perfectly with my check weights and my RCBS loadmaster.
I also have a 5-0-5 for the 1960's that also is dead accurate but it has the dial type adjuster for the 1/10th grain adjustments and is just a PIA to adjust, so I don't use it.

The 1010 was originally made by Ohaus, it is probably one of the best, if not THE best loading scales around.

If you are bending parts to make it work and it is brand new, I would think that it was damaged in shipping some how.

You should be bending/tweaking nothing. If it's that far out of whack, I would return it for another.

There have been 1010 scales that are over 5o years old and work as well as the day they were purchased.

Something is way wrong with your scale and I would take it back before you harm something that you will be blamed for and then you will have no recourse as you damaged it.

You could also give rcbs a call. They have great customer service and would probably take care of your needs.

My 5-0-5 works just great. Very repeatable and maintains a zero. Call RCBS

Thanks for the input, I am convinced that it is a great scale, just not the one I received. As I look more at it, I noticed that the screw is missing for the magnet bracket and the long spring is also bent so that it does not align in its groove. Obvious now that this was a return item and was simply resold. I am going to return it to Midway and get another one.

+1 for calling RCBS....I had a buddy break his Pro 2000....He drove up to RCBS in Oroville and they fixed it and even paid for the return shipping....It you live in a reasonable distance its worth the drive up....While you are there ask them about their "Factory Seconds" very good deals to be had....While they work on your stuff there is a great shooting supply store across the parking lot....

The gun shop you are refering to is Huntington's Sportsman Store.
Fred Huntington founded RCBS. His sons Fred & Buzz thave owned the store since their fathers death.

RCBS has some of the best customer service in the business. I stuck a round in my 30-06 die once. The dies were bought at a gunshow and were well used with some stripped threads on the screw. Well,they sent me a brand new set of dies.. Package up the 10-10 and send it to them...they will make good on it. P.S,Iveused my 10-10 for almost 15 years...still rocks!
