    Hornady zip spindle rant

    Okay here it goes...
I recently bought a Hornady 3 die set for .40 cal. I have sized about 700 cases and noticed casings were getting harder to size. I oiled the linkage to my press. It helped a little. I took a break and sat down. Looking up at the press I could see the decapping pin was off center. I touched it and it was loose. I unscrewed the pin and dang nab it the whole thing was bent. The tear drop nut that holds the decapping pin was unscrewed a bit. I could see a bit of red locktite that was used. Unfortunately it did not hold or the piece was not screwed on tight to begin with. Spindle and pin are bent. Double dang nab it.
I go to midway usa, zip spindle $9.59 and ONE decapping pin $2.99! Pins don't even come in a pack! pPlus shipping. Triple dang nab it! I call it quits for the day. Next day I pull the decapping pin from my (old Version) of Hornady 9mm dies. The decapper is one piece. Quadruple dang nab it, the retaining nut hole is too narrow for the decapper! Got to fix the problem fast. Recheck the 9mm retaining nut, put in the decapper and YES it threads into the new die. All is not lost. 3,000 cases now sized with a few more to go.
I think this new zip spindle deal is to sell more decapping pins and spindles. I don't like them. Any one know where I can find a vendor that has the old style decapping pins?

Have you called Hornady? They have very good customer service and may even replace it for free.

I'm certain Hornady will replace it for free. They replaced one of my zip spindles when it broke. They'll send you a bunch of decapping pins too, if you ask.

Hornady will replace em without any hassle whatsoever, just give em a call.

On a side note , I dont care much for the zip spindle system either...I never had an issue with a standard thread and lock nut.

It seems the zip spindle needs to be tightened a good bit more to stay tight and centered , then a simple lock nut on a threaded shaft.

I have been amazed by Hornandy, RCBS and Dillons customer service...they have even replaced stuff that broke due to my own fault!
