Thanks for the offer. Yeah I'm keeping an eye out for every little detail. I do pretty much the whole deal. I resize the cases, trim the cases to spec, chamfer the cases, clean out primer pockets with the tool and a q-tip, etc etc. I do pretty much all of it to the best of my ability but I must be doing something wrong.

I finished my second batch yesterday and I made it a deal to wash them in a non-oily substance (soapy water), and I basically went OCD on the cases. Trimming them to spec and cleaning the insides even. I handled the primers with gloves (I don't have an auto primer). I basically tried to remove every suspicious factor that took place in my first failure batch.

Thanks for asking all these questions......I'll be reloading for a K31 and a K1911 soon enough....I have a beefy bench and I'll make sure to get Redding Dies too.....thanks all!

At this time, I have no reason to believe that any one die is vastly superior to the others.

Take the FL sizing die completely out. Then move the ram so it's all the way up. Then screw the die i till it just touches the shell holder (you ARE using a shell holder aren't you), then lower the ram and screw the die in another 1/8 turn. Size one of your cases and then with out doing anything else see if it chambers and the bolt closes completely.

On the K31 the bolt is ONLY closed completely when the serial number on the bolt is at the 12 o'clock position.

I had to give up on reloading for my K-31. I was having the same trouble as you where the cartridge had to really be forced into the chamber. My palm would get pretty sore slamming that straight pull bolt closed. Unfortunately I never could figure out what the problem was and eventually sold the K-31.

I was also using the Lee dies and I also read about the Redding dies possibly being better suited. I hope you figure out your problem. (BTW I load for other calibers with no trouble)

That's unfortunate. I sure hope I don't have to sell my K31 because its too pricey to shoot and too difficult to reload for. I'll just have to put in the effort, or maybe look into some better dies.

                Loading for K31

                iareConfusE,
What brass are you using? I never had any problems with the brass, just the OAL of the round. Your brass sounds like it is very hard. It is not S&B brand by chance?

Hey, let me ask my roommate about this since he reloads ammo for his K31. He might be able to figure out why its not working for you.

                        K31 brass

                        iareConfusE,
PPU is very good brass, but it tends to be thicker than Winchester or Remington. Might be why you need so much force. Plus, your reloading bench must be very solid or a lot of the motion that you put into the reloading press is wasted.

Take up the kind offers of other Calgunners around you and see what they are doing. K31 rounds should be no different to reload for than 30-06.

I think i'll be needing some neck sizing dies real soon. Anybody have an extra die they're willing to sell?

Edit: Used a lot of the tips/advice that I got from this thread, and used a new lubricant, and all went well. Didn't require more than one arm of force and didn't require much man handling at all. Thanks for all the great info guys!

I've been subscribed to that guy for months now. Watched every single one of his videos. I've learned a lot more from him about guns and reloading than I have about my major in college lectures
