I'm in the same boat and have a great 35 Remington Marlin 336. It is a fabulous Deer and Pig rifle. I spent some time developing a load for the 200 gr Barnes. Here's a post on the Marlin Owner's forum about it.

I also spoke with an engineer at Barnes named Ty Herring. Here's his response:

Hi Paul

The .358 cal 200gr TSX requires a minimum impact velocity of 1800fps at impact and the 225gr TSX requires a minimum impact velocity of 1600fps at impact for bullet expansion. These are minimum requirements and I'd prefer to see them impacting 100 to 200fps above those minimums for full expansion.

With that said, we've not developed any data because of these requirements and the slow velocities the 35 Rem.

Cutting the base of the bullets to achieve higher velocities may accomplish your goal. Cutting off some of the nose may hurt the bullets ability to expand.

I'd be interested to hear your results.

There's also a lot of info on load development for 35 rem on the Marlin Owners Board, and a particular member who goes by 35remington has done a ton of load development all very carefully over a chrono. With today's modern powders there are certainly safe hot rod loads for modern rifles that are well over book values, and this is probably the route you need to go to get the Barnes to work for you. You will probably have a really hard time finding someone to do it for you as these are all going to be well over max loads.

You will also only be able to safely load one in the tube with this bullet as it is pointed and can set off the round in front of it under recoil.

Certainly this is going about things the hard way, but it can be done. Much easier to borrow or buy a rifle that has more readily available non toxic ammo.

Here's more info on reloading 35 Remington. These guys are getting over 2300 fps with 200gr bullets, with careful load development. None of this is for beginners.

One other option which may be much more acceptable for "normal" loads and being able to load more than one round in the tube is to use Barnes 140 gr. XPB pistol bullets for a 357 mag. You should be able to get these things hauling nicely out a 35 rem with standard load data, and would be more than adequate easily out to 100 yards.

The 35 Remington should be able to get a 200 grain bullet down range at 2000 to 2100 and change. Assuming the rifle is in good shape, sounds like the problem's solved. Do you have the reloading equipment?

I have neither reloading equipment, nor experience. I am still a slave commercially manufactured ammo.

I am hoping that someone can identify a reloader who charges for his services, if such people exist.

One possibility I thought of was buying some lead-free bullets, and some complete factory cartridges. If its possible to just pull and swap the bullets to lead free, I can try to find someone to help with a chrono.

You could give Custom Cartridge in Goleta a call. They do lead free stuff and will do any caliber you want.

Swapping lead-free bullets (copper alloy) for copper jacketed lead bullets is a VERY bad idea. The lead-free bullet of the same weight will be longer and use a significantly lower powder charge. A couple of the previous posts may be able to solve the problem for you.
