Deprime live primers?

Can I run live primers through my decapping die? I want to salvage some .45 reloads.

If you read reloading manuals it will say do not decap live primers. That said, half of the members here will say you can. I have done it, face shield or safety goggles is your friend. Keep all your powders and primers away from the press. Slow gentle pull on the lever will be your best bet.

Another option is to neutralize the live primers 1st, then deprime.

Its not a problem, they take a goot hit to light and you can't do that in a loading press. I've removed many live primers (in both directions) in my Dillon press.

I had to knock out about 100 live primers in some used .30 Carbine brass I bought. They were pretty dirty so I tumbled them for a few hours and then soaked them in some hot soapy water for about an hour. I did knock them out a little slower the I normally would have and had no problems.

Just push them out. Don't punch them out.

Just curious, why are you decapping them at all? Won't you just have to re-prime the cases anyway?

Or is it because you don't know what make primers they are and you what to use your own known load data?

Removing new seated primers is a normal procedure. When I load with my Dillon 550 and on the shell belling and powder filling stage, if the shell cracks. I normally place the powder back and re-shape the shell. Than I remove the new primer and use it again. And discard the cracked shell.

When you decap live primers make sure your old spent primer tray is empty. I catch the new primer with my hands.

You can also just remove the decapping pin from the sizing die and just resize the cases. Or you might/probably be able to get away with just rebelling the case without resizing.

Yeah but when you shoot IPSC every weekend and load 300 rounds per week
every primer counts! : O ) try finding small pistol primers....not that easy now a days!
That's why we are now using small rifle primers on our race guns.

I bought one of those $20 Lee single stage presses and a universal decapping die just for the occassions that I need to do that. I go slowly and /press/ them out without any problems.

The first time I tried it, I did it in my Dillon 650 and it worked just fine. I still spent the $30 for the single stage and die just in case. As a bonus, now I have a 2nd press that I can use.

Well, I want the 200 gr. bullets to use in my .45 GAP. I want to get rid of all the .45 ACP cases I have and I want to salvage the Bullseye powder. My biggest question, which I should have asked earlier, are the primers reuseable? I'll put them back into their package and get rid of them with the brass if I can.

Anyone need .45ACP brass? I'll leave the dang primers in there if anyone wants them. It's only about 50 rounds. Hell, I don't even have a bullet puller yet.

I decapped 400 or so live primers because I thought I had bad cases. They would not feed, come to find out I had not setup my press the right way and it was not going down far enough. Lesson learned. Just go slow, a bullet puller is a great tool to have, I have 2 of them

i'm confused why you want to salvage the primers since 45 gap is small pistol primed anyway

i hate loosing a primer every primer is precious

heck every 2 are the price of a bullet
