    Trimming?

I've been interested in reloading for a while now and I've been reading about it online. I watched a couple of YouTube videos of people using the turret style presses. my understanding from reading online is you need to trim the casing after sizing but watching the videos people are just pumping them out on the presses without trimming. Can someone please clairify.

9mm and 45acp cases wil 99.9999999999999999999% of the time never need triming... you usually see triming done with rifle cases... While I haven't seen any reloading videos.. it's quite possible that the brass might have already been sized and trimed and the loader is just being used to load cases...

Looking at .223. Isn't the primer removal and sizing done at the same time?

sizing is a separate issue than trimming.

That's what I thought but don't you trim after sizing? Or am I just not understanding how this works?

yes you trim after sizing, because the brass stretches when its worked

If the case is beyond the recommended length then yes you would trim but this not always required. What I do is set my calipers to the max length and just swip each case through really fast. If its passes through then its GTG. If it needs trimming ti goes in a little tupperware tub for trimming later. For my bench gun I let the cases grow it the chamber stops them. The good thing about this method is you never have to trim. The bad side is you can only use it in that one rifle and it takes a number of firings (3-4 or so) before you reach that max length but I have found it to produce much more predictable and consistent groups. I only use LC brass for this process because of its thickness and life it can be "stretched" and still have enough life left over to use a number of times in matches.

                ^ Thats what I do.

But trimming is IMPORTANT and should not be over looked, just like Lubing, sizing etc...

Remember that in reloading, theres no shortcuts. Just more effiecient ways of doing things.
