    Using a Chronograph

Finally the rifle's done, I've got bullets, powder, primers, cases and a PACT II chronograph . . . Time for the load development to begin.

When you set up the chronograph, do you do the velocity testing first and then shoot groups, or do you fire through the chronograph at the same time your shooting groups?

I've seen chronographs used before (never paid attention to how/what the person was doing), but never used one myself.

    Just wondering.

-Duct tape is like The Force. It has a dark side. It has a light side.
Used correctly, it holds the universe together. Used
incorrectly, it sticks your cat to the wall. -

Assuming that you are working up from a starting load (which you should), you measure your velocity and groups. Maximum velocity will not always give you the most accurate groups. I usually load rounds in increments up to or close to max, then begin with starting load, work up and if I am starting to see either signs of overpressure or max velocity I quit and dissasemble those rounds and anything over.

I'll typically shoot groups through the chrono. If its quick and dirty just to find velocity for a given temp or atmospheric condition, I'll just run them through.

When working up loads, I just basically ignore that the chrono is there concerning groups...have never seen it have any effect on POI.

group with testing. Just remember to set it at least 10 feet away. When they say "muzzle velocity" dont put the chrono at muzzle. lol.

When I work up loads, I bring my reloading gear with me...that way I dont have to dessemble any rounds.
