I wouldn't do it. 296 is used for Magnum rounds. Just sell it and buy 231. Powder stored in a cool and dry place will last very long without any problem.

I wrote Winchester about using 296 in other metallic cartridges and they said "don't do it".

296 is also funny in that Winchester recommends a load and says not to deviate. It's good in .44mag but I like 2400 better. As far as shelf life if it smells good it's OK. Kind of an ether smell not ammonia.

I use Winchester 296 for most of my Magnum revolver loads. That powder requires a heavy role crimp and a Magnum primer to light it off. Not recommended for 45acp. Just sell it and get what you need..
