Why is it that the NATO M16a2 has a 1:7 twist yet most commercial AR variants have 1:9. Why not make them milspec on a 1:7 twist? And 1:7 is difficult to find. Ive got a colt post ban HBAR with 1:7.

With 1/7" rifling twist you can shoot from 55 grain up to 77+ grain.

Only with experimenting with various bullet weights will you find what your particular barrel likes.

I know that I can shoot these grains out of the rifle.

This is what I wanted to know. Because it is really a 14.5 barrel that is tech. 16in due to the flash suppress. What grain is particular better to run threw that length.

Also, I have read 77gr for 1/7 twist out of a 20 inch barrel.

With a 1/7 you can shoot any grain. It perform best at longer distances with heavier and longer bullets.

I really never understood why so many carbine length barrels are 1/7. Seems redundant to put a short barrel with a twist that works best with long range bullets.

The 1/7 twist is used by the Military to stabilize the M-856 Tracer. As you will see in this attachment, the M-856 is a very long bullet (29.3MM) and needs the 1/7 twist.

A 1/9 twist will work fine if you are only shooting the 62 Gr. M-855.

Only through trail and error you will find out. Load like 20 or 30 rounds of each bullet weight. Unfortunately I have not tried any bullet weighing more than 69 grains. If you have any 69 grain bullets then I would start with that then work your way to more heavier bullet weight.
