    Military Brass vs Commercial

Why is Commercial brass is much more deep in color than military brass? Is there any benefit using either? I reload 308 and 223, and I've noticed after tumbling for 6-8 hours, using corn media, the LC military turns out light color gold and Win, R-P, FC commercial is a deep brass yellow color. I'm sure they have different quantity of metal contents but is one better than the other

They are different, but "better" depends on the use. (The color difference is probably due to a slightly different copper concentration in the alloy, but that's just speculation on my part.) LC .308 is probably better for use in M14 rifles as it is thicker and tougher than commercial (resists deformation in the M14 brass monster). However, I've seen just the opposite in .223. Zediker recommends using Winchester commercial brass for the .223.

What do you plan to use the ammo in? If I were shooting a bolt gun, I'd probably use Lapua brass, but no sense chewing up that expensive (and soft) stuff in a gas gun.

I use surplus military brass for my 308 because I can't beat the price.

just seperating my brass, I have bolt guns for both 308 and 223, as well as semi for both calibers, for the bolt guns, it is nice as I only have to neck size after the shooting session. as mentioned, I wanted to keep the premium stuff for the bolt guns.

I believe there is a difference in brass due to the length of storage. military brass needs to be able to store for very long amounts of time, and commercial brass usually has a relatively short shelf life. ( especially these days ). The metal content is different due to these requirements. Just my .02cents.

I use nothing but LC 223 brass for matches and SHTF loads. LC brass is thicker and stronger than other commercial brass.

I like to reload with LC match brass for 308. It shoots really well in my M-1A and the bolt gun.
