    .45 Colt advice needed, please

Hello All, I was wondering if anyone has the name of a good manual that covers 45 colt "cowboy loads". You see I have an Uberti 1858 Rem. replica that is C&B and I want to put a R&D Conversion cylinder on it for some black powder loads. Those are no problem as I have shot BP before, and just plan to use the same load in the cartrige with a grease cookie and some filler for compression.

However I would like to be able to pop off a few rounds at the local indoor range (no BP allowed). I understand that cat fart cowboy loads will be safe. I have ordered some Trail Boss to use. I have looked at the Hogdon web site but it does not give a specific "cowboy load" although some are pretty weak, in the range of 800fps and 8100psi. That seems pretty cat fartish to me, but I would like to read it in a specific reloading manual. None of mine list "cowboy loads". This is a fairly sturdy firearm. Steel frame, and it handles 35 grns of Goex fffg all day long. But I don't know how much pressure that is developing, or the burn rate.

Sorry this is so long, and help would be appriciated. Thanks

Stupid people don't know they are stupid. Because they are stupid. They will follow evil geniuses and do their bidding, because they are stupid.

Really super stupid people look up to, and follow stupid people like they were geniuses, because to them, they are. Unfortunately the reality of it is, that doesn't make stupid people any smarter.

That right there is the root cause to most problems in the world.

Straight from IMR's site. Dunno if this covers what you wanted completely tho...

IMR/Hodgdons Trail Boss powder is perfect. Fluffy so it fills the case, clean, and very mild. I use it to replicate .38 special loads in .357 cases and it rocks! Made specifically for lead bullets and cowboy style loads.

Thanks for the replies. I am assuming the "cowboy loads" that are sold commercialy are smokeless, and not Black Powder, I don't know. I guess I will see if R&D have some answers. They advertise that you can use Cowboy Cartrage ammo only. I just don't want to buy a manual that doesn't list this as specific cowboy loads. None of mine list it.

trailboss is great, you can't overcharge without compressing the load (don't compress)

it gives that "black powder feel"

Thanks five.five six, I have since found a couple of books on Amazon. One of them is a black powder reloading manual for metallic cartriges. Hopefully it is trustworthy, and hits abit on pressures.

I shoot Cowboy Action Shooting matches twice a month and my primary caliber reloads are the 45 Colt. After some years of experimenting with different recipies with smokeless powders like Unique, Titegroup, Clays and 231, there all good powders but I found Trailboss to be the best for my needs. I settled on a load using 5.5 grains of Trailboss with a 205 grain Bear Creek Moly coated bullet. This load can also be used for a 250 grain bullet also. A "Cowboy Load" is considered a load with an all lead bullet that has a muzzle velocity under 1000 fps for pistol ammo and 1400 fps for rifle ammo. This rule was set by "SASS". Single Action Shooting Society. Shooter try to keep recoil light for fast follow up shots and Trailboss does that.
