    Dill 650 Die Choice - 223

I will be purchasing a Dillon 650xl setup with casefeeder here in the next few weeks to reload for '.223'.

Right now I am looking at dies. I currently have lee dies for 223 but intend on selling them and purchasing some really good dies. I currently have a blaster 14.5 bushmaster upper that I will shoot a lot of cheap 55g fmj ammo through and I also have a 20" 1/8 HB AR upper that I would really like to make some good ammo for.

I am curently looking at these dies...
Graf & Sons, the reloading authority, has a wide selection of reloading supplies, shooting supplies, ammo and more.

Our Bench Rest Sizing Dies are manufactured from the finest quality steel and are hand polished both before and after heat treating to guarantee an extra-fine finish. They are all equipped with our exclusive E-Z Out Expander button which solves the age-old problem of keeping case necks concentric during the neck expanding operation. Our Ultra Seater Die includes all the popular straight line seating features of our original Bench Rest Seater Die plus an ultra-accurate micrometer adjustment feature for adjusting bullet seating depth. The Forster Ultra™ allows you to adjust seating depth to .001" or even .0005" increments. After you have seated your bullet close to the desired depth and measured it, simply adjust the micrometer stem down to the desired depth and the cartridge will be exactly the length you need. Fine tuning of your rounds to bring them out close to the lands of your rifling is simple with the Ultra™ micrometer die. Set includes Full Length Sizer Die and Ultra Micrometer Seater Die. Shellholder sold separately.

They are all equipped with our exclusive E-Z Out Expander button which solves the age-old problem of keeping case necks concentric during the neck expanding operation. Our Bench Rest Seater Die features a specially machined, close fitting chamber that holds the case, the bullet and the seating stem all in perfect alignment. This innovative chamber design is still the hallmark of our Bench Rest Seater Dies, because it's the premier system of all the so-called "in-line" seater systems that actually supports the entire outside diameter of the sized case rather than just the bullet and case neck. Set includes Full Length Sizer Die and Bench Rest Seater Die. Shellholder sold separately.

I believe that I will keep my lee .223 dies and change out the seating die with the premium die when loading precision rounds and use the premium full length resizing die for them both. What do you think would be the best dies to use for my precision upper? (Randall?)

    Stages...
    1. Resize/Decap Premium die
    2. Powder drop
    3. powder check
    4. Premium Seater\Lee Seater
    5. Crimp

    Does this look good?

I am looking to buy from Grafs. They sell a "DILLON XL650 222 REM MAG/ 223/5.56mm PRESS w/o DIES"

Hence why I am looking at dies.

Does it include the converstion kit?
It should if they are advertising it as a .223.

I would just get the Dillon Dies. The Decap/resizer die includes a stuck case remover.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

It does, however Grafs does not even sell the regular 223 dillon dies. They only sell the Dillon 223 carbide dies. Which are over 130 bucks. I could buy the dies straight from dillon however for the same price as the retail non carbide dies at dillon I could purchase these dies listed above.

Why not buy the kit from Dillon and get the dies with it?

I have started out with a cheap set of RCBS 2 die set many moons ago. Since then I have purchased Redding and have tried a few different combinations.

              For years I used to:

              1. Tumble and inspect
              2. Lube
              3. FL size (i only own black rifles) on a single stage press.
              4. Swage Primer pockets if needed.
              5. Tumble and inspect.
              6. Trim, Deburr & Champfer
              7. Prime cases
              8. charge cases
              9. Seat bullet
              10. Final inspection

When I got my 550B a few years back I would still do steps 1 - 7 the same way and then run the primed cases through the 550 and charge/seat bullets.

I have tried different FL sizer dies as well including Dillons Carbide.

For the last few month, I have been experimenting with the X-sizer die and have a 200 pc lot of brass (Remmington) that I set aside for the X-sizer. I have handloaded the lot 4 times now and for the most part, it has been working out. I set my tool head up with the following:

Station 1: RCBS X-sizer die & prime case
              Station 2: Charge case
Station 3: Redding Comp seater die
Station 4: Empty or Redding Crimp

I may set up a 1000 pc lot if this works a couple of more times.

I am also thinking of ordering a new 1050 Super in 223 but for now...

I have a dealer account with grafs and can purchase everything much cheaper. I also have the opportunity to jump on a calguns group buy and get a better deal.

How are you liking your comp seater die?

I am looking at getting the Dillon XL650 with case feeders for both 223 and 9mm. I buy my brass pre swaged/resized/trimmed for now.

Looking for my setup to look like this with Case Feeder for .223
                ToolHead 1:
                1: Resizer/Decap (Forster Resize)
                2: Dillon 1200B Motorized Trimmer

                ToolHead 2:
                1: Prime
                2: Drop Powder
3: Seat with Forster Comp Die
                5: Crimp (only blasting ammo)

                  .
yes, it would come with the conversion kit, but doesn't come with dies. Dillon knows that you have options regarding to dies, so they have you purchase the dies separately. But, in order to be a .223 press, you have to have the properl conversion kit, so the press is sold with the conversion kit, already installed IIRC.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I like the Redding Comp Seater dies... I have them on my 2 x XL650 (1 set up for 9mm, the other for 45ACP) as well and although they may be a bit over kill for pistol, they still come in handy for all the different bullets and weight that I assemble for which is why I brought them for these two calibers. Just record the Micrometer setting for each bullet and your good to go.

I also use them for most of my mainstream calibers such as 308 Win, 30-06, 300 WBY and of course 223 REM as already stated. I have them in a couple of others but I cannot recollect right now.

                      I like them. bottom line.
