    762X54R Ammo Questions.

Hey my uncle and I both bought psl's at the costa mesa show this weekend. We also bought 880 surplus rounds from a ammo dealer there. I've done some reading and I have read 2 things that raise a red flag for me. 1 corrosive ammo and 2 high yield ammo or grain. The corrosive ammo doesn't seem like a huge issue just a pain to clean but the high grain/yield ammo seems like something that could be an issue.( forgive me if I'm refering to it incorrectly )

How can I find out what I have? Can I use 440 rounds of corrosive High grain/yield ammo without damaging my psl? Is there somewhere on the box or tin that I can find out what I have?

I also read somewhere that wolfe makes non corrosive ammo. Is it reloadable? Is it more expensive? Can I buy it locally?

If this ammo is super bad and it's going to harm my PSL should I just buy a Big 5 gun and shoot them from that? I'm already spent $170 on ammo and a big 5 gun would cost about $150.

Thanks in advance for the info.

I think that the 440 rnd count cans are nearly always the
light ball ammo. The heavier ball is lower count in the cans
as I have come to understand it.

It sounds like you are asking about ammo with the correct projectile weight for your PSL. You've probably already read that PSL owners recommend only using "light" ball ammo. That would be ammo with a projectile weight of around 150 grains.

If you post a picture of the can of ammo that you bought we can probably tell you what the projectile weight is. Sometimes the tins of light ball ammo have the letters "LPS" on them or cyrillic letters that look kind of like "ANC" Sometimes the projectiles have a silver tip.

If you don't want to shoot corrosive surplus, Wolf sells a non-reloadable non-corrosive light ball that is made in Russia and a reloadable non-corrosive light ball made in Serbia. You can order them both from J&G Sales in Arizona...

J&G also sells corrosive non-reloadable Bulgarian surplus light ball. It's very likely that that's what you bought at the gunshow. They have a picture of the can on J&G's web site.

I'm 99% positive that you have corrosive ammo. You likely have some of the Bulgarian spam can stuff, which is sold in cans of 440 (typically in a case of 2 cans @ 880).

Wolf ammo is non-corrosive, but it is NOT reloadable, as it's steel-cased.

If you want reloadable ammo for cheap, check out some of the Yugoslavian surplus. It's non-corrosive, brass-cased. You can get the UMC or Winchester ammo from Big5 but be warned, you'll be paying nearly $1/rd for it (ask me how I know). It's OK if you want some ammo simply for the brass that you can re-use, but you're still better off getting some of the Yugoslavian surplus from someone like Ammoman.

The Yugoslavian surplus is corrosive and non-reloadable. It is also heavy ball (182 grain).

I typed in 762X54R surplus ammo in the google search bar and the first thing that came up was centerfire systems. http://www.centerfiresystems.com/surplus_762x54r.aspx

It looks identical to the ammo pictured. It has the same red glue, same silver discoloration on the ejector tab, same dark circle around the bottom of the brass, and same paper packaging. I will still post pictures of the crate and tins when I get home.
