    Help with .308 reloads, please!

    Hi all,
    Got a problem here...shooting surplus SA .308 thru a Savage 10FP bolt, not a problem (147gr bullet, 2.80" OAL)
Loaded some using once fired brass LC, SA with 147gr FMJ and 180gr Sierra Spitzer bullets at 44gr BCL-2 (max load 46gr), CCI 200 primers and OAL 2.80".
Both loads have the following problem:
When I load the cartridge into the chamber and push in the bolt to meet the case head, it will not fully go into chamber...it will not allow me to put down the bolt handle. I tried reducing the OAL to as low as 2.743" and same results.
What am I doing wrong? Single stage Rock-chucker press and RCBS full lengh die set #15501. Seater die is marked "RCBS .308 WIN SEAT.9

The headspacing on your cases is too long.

If it's machinegun fired brass, you'll probably have to use an SB die. Either way, a case gage would identify your problem.

Are you full length sizing your brass? Are you going hard over center with the handle and is the shell holder bottoming out on the sizing die? Hard over center is the way the handle feels when your shell holder bottoms out on your sizing die, it feels like a little pop. When you are going hard over center you are pushing that shoulder back as far as it will go with your die and that is where the 308 headspaces off of. You might need to crank your die down a litte more. Your chamber is fine if you can chamber the factory stuff but it sounds like you are not sizing the cases down all the way with your reloads. After adjusting your dies and sizing down the case see if it will chamber in your rifle. If your rifle will not chamber the facory ammo as well then you might have a headspace problem with the gun. Headpace is easy to check with a go or no go guage you need yours to close on a go guage. Good luck.
