    Need help with a Dillon 650 and 9mm

    I have a Dillon 650 and have sucessfully loaded 30,000+ .45acp and 10mm rounds. I have recently started loading 9mm and am getting frequent binding between the shell plate and ejector wire. It happens when loading rounds and sizing brass. On the downstroke when the shell plate moves when it binds, if I back off it clears fine but it throws me off. I tried another ejector wire and tweaked another but nothing has helped. It is not limited to any one station on the shell plate but happens randomly. I have talked with Dillon and they told me to take some metal off the leading edge of the shell plate which I did, and it helped. Stupid me I took off too much and now the cases come off the shell plate. They are sending me a new shell plate as we speak. Anyone have any ideas? Sammy

    First of all, is the bolt holding the shellplate down too tight? It needs to be tightened down, then backed off 1/4 turn and then the set screw underneath needs to be tightned to keep the bolt from re tightening. I gotta run and cant give a real detailed description right now but someone else should have some more suggestions shortly.

      The shell plate is on correctly. It is not a matter of the shell plate moving freely but the finished round getting pinched between the ejector wire and shellplate.

        The shellplate should be greased underneath.
        Snug the bolt down and back off the bolt JUST enough for free movement.
        No more than you need for free movement.

        With 30K on your indexing pawl, check it for burrs.
        Every once in a while, you need to knock the burrs off it to free up it's movement.

        The ejector wire needs to be as close to the shellplate as possible to do an effective job of kicking the case out of the shellplate.

          The indexing paw has a crease that runs across it mid way. It is fairly deep and so I replaced it with one from the spare parts bag. It is still hanging up and I noticed no difference. Dillon has a new shell plate on the way that I think will help.

            I load most calibers with ease, but 9mm is a bear on my 650 as well. I was thinking to buy another shell plate and ejector wire to tune just for it, but I also found that altering your stroke at the end helps give it time to engage the wire without knocking it over suddenly.

            ON EDIT: I have since bought a new gen III xl650 press so I was hoping to try it on that someday soon. it does everything else just a bit smoother than on my old Gen II, so we'll see.
