How many once fired brass is not reloadable?

I bought 1k of 9mm brass from a fellow calgunner. I'm new to reloading and about 1/4 of the brass I received, the neck size is too large to crimp to bullet. Is this common with once fired brass?

The bullet is 115gn from berry's. Very frustrating because I wasting quite a few primers to realize that the case neck is too large for the bullet.

You control neck size with your reloading dies, first you resize the cases which makes them smaller then you expand the neck to the proper diameter for the bullet. Usually the pistol expander leaves a slight flare at the mouth to start the bullet. If your doing these steps and the case won't fit in the crimp die you may be over flaring the cases . Not sure if this is the problem,

The dies just expands the neck just enough for the bullet to sit in a tiny bit for me to crimp it. It's 9mm. I haven't loaded in rifle rounds, but I figure that would be the case. the 9mm cases are so inconsistent, that mouth of the case is too wide. I can feel the friction with expanding, but the bad cases, as soon as the reach the expander there is no friction what so ever.

Sounds like your brass is spoiled. I can dispose of it for you if you wish.

When the round is fired the case mouth will expand to seal off the barrel breach. The first step of reloading is to resize the case back to a smaller diameter.

The first die (of 3 or 4 in the set) you use is the resizing die. That Die will both deprime and resize the case. The case now won't accept a bullet because it's too narrow. The 2nd die will flare the mouth of the case so a bullet can be seated just inside the mouth of the case.

If your resizing die is not properly sizing the diameter of the case then maybe you have a bad die.

I have a RCBS 3 die set. One just deprimes, 2 resizes the neck, and 3 crimps the bullets. It is just the opposite. The case mouth is already to large to accept bullets. Am I missing something here. I thought 1 just deprimes the reloaded cases.

Does the 1 dies which decaps the primer, shorten the neck of the case. If that is the case, then I know I have resolved my problem.

Here is what the RCBS instructions say:
"In this 3-die set the first die sizes and decaps the case. The second die expands and flares (bells)the case mouth toreceive the bullet, and the third dieseats and, if necessary, crimps the bullet."
It sounds like you haven't adjusted the 1 and 2 dies properly.

The sizing/decapping die doesn't sound like it's adjusted properly. With the press in the "up" stroke, tighten the die down until it hits the shell holder. Then back it out 1/4 turn (see your manual for more info). It should now resize and decap.

Yeah....Went online and looked up the directions. Should have done that before I started.

Your resizing die is not adjusted correctly. As a result you are not full length resizing your cases back down to factory spec.

No....Should have though. I'm the type of person to just jump into things. Bad idea when it comes to reloading though.

Reloading is not something to "jump into". Attention to detail is the critical element.
