    Presses

I have an old single stage press I'm gonna start out with and some rifle dies. I'm looking to get a really good progressive press later. I want a Dillon 650 XL since I want to reload Pistol and Rifle. One guy told me I should keep single stage reloading rifle and just get a progressive pistol press.

My question is do any of you use the same press for rifle and pistol reloading?
and as a follow up question what accuracy are you reloading to?

    Thanks

old? dude, stop making so many freaking threads.... you just made one about how you're new to reloading... put it all in one if you're gonna ask a sh** ton of questions.... and read the ABC's of reloading and some loading manuals. Rifle primers have large and small primers because of different calibers... not because of preference. read up and then ask questions if the books/articles don't explain.

I'm asking because I want to reload both 223 (small rifle) and 308 (large rifle)
Sorry if my question asking bothers you, I really don't know anyone who has reloaded in years so there information is outdated at best.
For some reason I thought a FORUM was to ask questions?

        Carpenter409,

many folks reload rifle loads on progressive presses.

As a matter of fact, some NATIONAL long-range shooters/champions reload for long guns on progressive presses.

The Dillon XL650 is a great press. Set-up a few toolheads and dies for the different calibers you want to reload, and it just takes a few moments to swap them out.

But be forewarned, rifle reloading is much more detailed, and requires a few added items/tools, and extra steps to prep the brass.

As for accuracy, it depends on the rifle, as well as your shooting skills.

        Shoot with a purpose.

Cool read waldog. I'm in the same boat, tons of brass and nothing to reload with. I just need to buy a reloading package and upgrade as time allows. Hornady or Lee were my options. RCBS was in for 2nd place.

I bought the Hornady LNL. I am VERY satisfied with the press. I have also loaded on the Dillon Square Deal, 550, 650, and a few rounds on a 1050. Of the four Dillon's, the 650 comes closest in comparison to the LNL. BOTH THE DILLON AND HORNADY are great presses with super customer support.
The things that swayed me toward the Hornady LNL were:
              1. Powder Measure
              2. Quick-change bushings
              3. Primer system
              4. Smooth auto-indexing

I primarily load pistol ammo on mine.

RaymondMillbrae and Waldog thanks for the info, I've heard nothing but good things about Dillon's customer service. That's I guess what had me swaying towards Dillon at this point.
I guess I'm worried more about powder charging when I load Stick type powder I will not get an accurate consistent charge every time.

                Thanks again for your answers

You can get powder measure lingage from both RCBS & Redding to use a cylinder stlye powder measure on a progressive press. I have one set up for Varget for my 550 Dillon, it would work on a 650 also.

How much do you shoot, and what is your reason for reloading?

Thanks for the heads up anyracoon i'll give her a look see.
Bill I shoot more pistol than anything, but my reason for reloading is to be able to have ammo when I want it. I have brass and access to powder and primers so with things so screwy why not reload!
Pistol ammo is plinking ammo but I would like my rifle ammo to be between match grade and plinking ammo. I have a Colt SP1 (1 in 12 twist) which can shoot anything but is more accurate with light loads like 50-55 grain.
                      Why Bill what's your thought?

Mike, Call Brian after the New Year he will answer all you questions about the Dillon reloading machines. I have been using Dillon's since the 1980's and love my XL-650 w/ casefeeder.

I strongly recommend evaluating the Hornady LNL as well. It has many features that are better than Dillon. AT LEAST IN MY OPINION. (No death threats Dillon Owners !

If you buy Dillon your gonna be happy. If you buy LNL your gonna be happy. Like I said before, BOTH are great machines with GREAT customer service.

Red and Blue machines can live together with out conflict. It's just the folks who pull the handle who have the conflict. I happen to like Blue you like Red. No Problem.
