    9mm Ammo for steel targets

    Hello all,
I am looking to start some steel plate target practice and would like to know the types of ammo that would be best to use. I have been told in the past that FMJ should not be used at all and I do not wish to put non-jacketed lead in my Glock. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

FMJ'S is what I use at the steel challenge in Piru! Are you worried about ricochet? Well I have to admit I did get pepperd once at a match @ apple valley gun club by another shooters round, target was about 20' away and shrapnel cut my big azz nose! So I guess frangible ammo is the best but I'll keep using fmj's (cheaper)

Shooting is dangerous. I shoot steel with 230gr fmj's. Probably no less than 15-20yds though.

For close distances I would recommend frangible. Yesterday I was using FMJ's but than again I was shooting at a steel plate 100yds away lol

Shooting is actually very safe as a sport, disabling/fatal injury's are rare. If you are shooting steel you will get hit by ricochets, get used to it. Frangables may ricochet less but I assure you they can and will come back on you just like lead and copper fragments do.

Wear safety glasses, a hat with a good brim, and proper clothing, you'll be fine.

Oh, and try not to whine like a little girl when you do get hit with a 1x1mm spec of lead. Be a man and finish the stage without hesitation!

I use FMJ on steel all the time and never have any issues. The bullet mostly blows up and all thats left is little round disks.

Will shooting hollowpoints cause more fragmentation or just a lump when hitting the steel target? I need to order bullets and will be (hopefully) shooting on steel targets soon.

Chances are with the adrenaline going, you won't notice. I was shooting a match the other day with a guy I know. Tiny ricochet nicked his arm. He didn't realize until someone pointed it out. Happens. Our club (and some others) don't allow FMJ with steel plates. Not sure how valid it is.

That is all I ever use for steel targets.

The key is not shooting steel at < 7 yds away.
