    5.56mm Reloading Question

    Hey Guys,

    (I searched)

I was wondering if the loads I'm working up today are going to be a problem, or not. I decided on using Lake City brass because of the extra thickness and because I have the most of it than anything else. The extra thickness has sort of become an issue, though...

I'm using 68gr Hornady "Match" HPBTs (which, I want to add, are the most consistent bullets I've ever seen) and IMR 4064. The range of throw on 4064 (according to the Hogdon website) is 22.5gr to 24gr and it acknowledges that the 24gr throw is a compressed load. I chose to throw 23 grains, as I've never used this powder before, didn't want to risk throwing too low (and not cycling my AR) and didn't want to "push the envelope" on the pressures by throwing too high. The only problem is that I can hear the powder compressing, even at 23gr (I think, due to the extra thickness of the Military brass)...

Is this going to be an issue? Should I back off to somewhere between 22.5gr and 22.8gr, maybe?

Did you check the weight of the LC cases compared to commercial cases? I have never seen a difference for mil brass & commercial 223 only with 308 and 30'06. I have loaded 24g of 4064 and 60g vmaxes and had good results but with that powder I trickled every round. You are after accuracy right? I would trickle every round (time consuming,I know but worth it) the only powder I'll throw is ball powders like 748, blc2 etc.

Lake City .223 is not any heavier than commercial. In fact, I think some commercial is heavier.

I use VV powders (N140 and N540) and they meter just fine through my Harrell's dispenser.

I was reading the Sierra online manual and it has a similar load for a 69 grain hpbt. I think I'm ok.

I'd do some at 22.5 and 22.8, check for pressure signs.
