Stupid newb brass question

I have reloaded with much success some .45 acp using a 185 grain hp and five grains of unique.

There is one catch, I have found that after resizing, some brass cases do not fit all the way into my dillon case gage easily at the rim. I have started sorting brass into different piles according to how easily the entire case fits the gage.

I have noticed ammo I make from the easy pile functions perfectly. Ammo from the not so easy pile has issues every now and then. Especially with newer shooters, I suspect a little limp wristing might be involved. Cases that are a little tight I will work in and out a few times to size them down again.

Is this a standard reloading issue? Is there anyway to completely resize brass without fooling around with a case gage? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you need to lower your sizing die.

Just the rim of the case that gets inserted into the case holder is a little big.

Check for any burrs on the rim of the brass. I've noticed on several of my pistol brass in different calibers has burrs that's causing the brass not to in completely in the case gauge.

I have scene a few burrs, but i almost seems like the whole rim expands a little bit when fired.

There is always a small area of the case that the sizing die won't quite reach.
This is so far down the case that we are just above or just into where the walls of the case start getting thicker to become the base of the case.

If after resizing as far down as you can, you still have a slight bulge into the thicker area of the case walls, this is a sign of over pressure or an unsupported chamber. The case is damaged, trash it!

Try the barrel you are going to shoot the ammo in. That's the real test. I stopped using my case gauges.

That's what I do Sometimes the case gauge is bigger then the chamber of your pistol as well.

This what I would suspect. If it has burrs I'll give a few twists in the case holder to smooth everything out. If its still sticking I'll crush the mouth of the case so it can't be used again and toss it in the recycle bucket.

+1 on that. It is really important if you are using a new bullet shape - make sure it doesn't contact the lands before the case is fully seated. The case gauge will not tell you that.
