.45-70 Ammo?

Hey guys, just picked up a Marlin 1895 SBL and am looking for a line on some bulk ammo. Any tips or recommendations?

I'm not setup to reload at this time but somewhere in the future I plan on it, until then I'm at the mercy of the internet...

Remington makes a fine moderate velocity (safe for any gun) round. It'll shoot and not abuse your shoulder. Without any padding you'll still see some surface bruising, but nothing worse than a 20 gauge would do.

The Hornady Leverevolution ammo is probably the cheapest commercial ammunition running around right now. Somewhat surprising, since it's also one of the flattest shooting rounds in 45-70 and a solid medium-large game round.

Not bulk, but if you're going after big game or want some bear repellent (ahem), bring Garret cartridges along. Upgrade the butt-pad to a Pachmayr Decelerator first, and lean into it, the recoil from those will put you back.

45-70 is not generally found or shot in bulk.

Thanks, the 1895SBL comes from the factory with a Pachmayr Decel pad. Oddly enough the best price I found for 100 rounds was for the Hornady Leverolution ammo.

Cabela's has bulk lead 45-70 in ammo cans. Ultramax commercial reloads $195/100rds in a dry box. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...839&hasJS=true

The SVL recoil pad is the best for the leverguns. Had one on my Guide Gun that I had. Loved it.

The problem with that Cabela's price is it's $60 more than the high performance Hornady Leverevolution (at the link in my earlier post). I have no idea why the Hornady is the cheapest, as the Cabela's bulk uses cast lead bullets (basically $0.05 each if you're paying for virgin lead and you're using new casting machines) while the Hornady uses a polymer-tipped copper jacketed bullet that costs a lot more to make...

Well, I crunched some numbers here to see what I could come up with.

Using Missouri Bullet's 405gr LFN, virgin Starline brass, I can come up with two loads/prices.

A 405gr LFN at 1450fps for trapdoors is $92.50/100 rounds. This duplicates the blackpowder load ballistics.

A 405gr LFN at 1000fps for cowboy action is $85/100 rounds.

This is for new manufacture ammunition, NOT my factory reloads.

I can get dies and press conversion here less than a week. Decided to add this to the catalog, as I've been getting a number of requests for some loads. Full pricing with bulk discount is on my new site (www.freakshowmfg.com).

Check out www.gmdr.com rcbs site with lots of load data using shotgun & pistol powders with lead bullets. In the 1970's I started out with an Egyption 11mm Remington Rolling Block converted with a navy arms octagon barrel in 45-70, I cast bullets using Lee electric pot & their aluminum 405 gr mold but I used linotype or with wheel weights & pure lead.It was for schuetzen shooting matches but I couldn't come close to the old experts with their pope barreled 32-40 schuetzen rifles and for sure I couldn't afford to acquire one!Lee aluminum bullet molds worked great for me.I have Marlin XLR 45-70 but I bought nosler partition bullets and lead from oregon trail then a retired fellow LE gave me some cast bullets & I gave him some 451 Speer 200gr JHP known as flying dixie cups or ashcans used in 1911 45acp semi autos,LASO used them for years.I've been reloading ammo since 1969.Start like I did I bought an RCBS Jr single stage loader(Look on ebay for one),brass lube pad from rcbs ,I bought a 505 scale,45-70 rcbs dies,lee electric lead pot & lee aluminum 405 dies,my next purchase was an OHAUS DUO 7200 Powder Measure in early 1970's and I'm still using it 39 yrs later.I use it for powder with my Dillon RL550B.I just went on ebay located an RCBS Jr3 single stage reloader bid is up to $22 ends in 2days and 22 hours item # 457383313 buy it all used and save money also look for used lee loaders

If a person isnt a reloader themselves , that is a great price...the Starline brass is the best.

I looked at the Ultramax again and in their defense, it is new manufacture ammo from them I stated above. However my price is still 50% less than theirs and my ammunition is new manufacture as well. I also have quantity discounts for 500, 1000, and 10,000 rounds. Cowboy load is as low as $75/100 and the trapdoor load is as low as $82.50/100. That is at the 10,000 round quantity though. Case of 1,000 rounds will run $80/100rds for the cowboy and trapdoor case of 1,000 rounds is only $87.50/100rds. Figure a 60% savings off of the Ultramax price from Cabelas.
