I learned something about .45 ACP today...

So there I was pressing out some .45 acp on the old dillon today and I started to consider the casings. They are the same as 30/06 bases. So it stood to reason that when the 1911 was created they took the standard 06 casing and trimmed them down.......

    What do you all think?

Sure, makes sense. Is there any difference in the primer pocket for Large Rifle Primers and Large Pistol Primers?

We'll never know because the 30.06 case is just a shortened 30-03 case and that was designed by a committee for the Springfield 03 rifle.

JM Browning designed the 45 ACP cartridge for the Colt 03 pistol, also in 1903.

      So who copied who?

They were copied from or at the very least heavily influenced by the Mauser 8x57J and 7x57.

BTW The Large Pistol and Large Rifle primers are the same diameter but different heights. They are NOT interchangeable.

Yup. The 30-03 and 30-06 are both based on the Mauser cartridge. The 1903 Springfield was a licensed copy of the Mauser and we (the US) were paying royalties to the Mauser company during WWI on every 1903 we made.

The 8mm Mauser is in the same class as the 30-06 and handles the 200-220gr bullets a lot better than the 30-06 does. I'd take a rifle chambered in 8mm Mauser over the 30-06 any day.

What's also nice about the .45 ACP and .30-06/.308 family is they share the same shellplates and shellholders which makes for easy swapping on certain Dillon machines. Load one on the 550 all you need is a toolhead, dies, and powder funnel. Done. Same with the .380 and .223 or the .303 and .44 Mag and .50 AE.

The 10mm Automatic is really a .30 Remington shortened. The .30 Remington is a rimless .30-30 Winchester. I love cartridge history/design.
